RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted July 29, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 29, 2012 Here's a selection of photographs taken around 2002 of the once, now gone, very common "MGR" wagon, also known as HAA (and variations) I attempt to photograph every vehicle in trains, and this includes coal so I have a lot of photos of wagons, if they visited Liverpool docks I photographed both sides Here's the first few, taken at Warrington Bank Quay The train was 6M32, 08:45, Knockshinnoch - Walton Yard loaded MGR hauled by 66194. trisonic
Thanks, Dave (again!) Photos of this sort very unromantic yet invaluable to modellers. Best, Pete.
250BOB
Brilliant Dave, I have just completed replacement coupling(closer), re wheeling, etc., my 25yr old set(14) of unruly MGR wagons. What a difference in looks and performance it has made, especially to the running qualities...no more random de railments....reversing too without derailments,. Your pics will be useful for my future weathering attempts on them....especially any older pics you may have. rgds................Bob
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted August 1, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 1, 2012 Hi Bob, sadly I didn't start photographing wagons (apart from a very odd one) until around 2000 - there were some HAAs that still had, faintly, the old COV AB panels, I've certainly got photos of them, but probably not scanned - one day. 30th March 2002, Liverpool Docks HAA 350660 parked in the cripple siding - I don't think this ever worked again, cut up on site. 24 April 2002 another 6M32, 08:45, Knockshinnock - Walton Yard MGR H?A 357116 HAA 352191

woodenhead
I do miss the rhythm of an MGR on jointed track, there was nothing else like it and not much on youtube of these trains on anything but welded rail.

250BOB
Hi Dave, There you go....not just me and you......Ken in Chicago no less.!!. But I know what you mean.....I do wish more people would sometimes take the time to just show appreciation when people take the time to post pics. Can you give me a bit of background on the retaining rim around the top of the MGR's.......when and why were these introduced, I dont remember seeing a lot of these. Also, I tend to remember mostly red framed wagons in the 70's and 80's....when and why the change to yellow?. Thanks.................Bob.

Hi Bob, info from here The canopies were fitted from build on some of the wagons, so ca 1964 - they were mainly used in Scotland until they ended up on lime stone services. I'm not sure about the yellow frames but I'd guess from the 1970s some were yellow, some were also painted in EWS red. hth
Bon Accord
Were not the yellow frames part of the 'Railfreight Coal' livery? Beforehand they were of course railfreight red.

RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted September 10, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted September 10, 2012 Hmmm. Still no luck. Try the top level link http://pryke.webege.com/ then from the menu on the left, select MGR Wagon Fund and then MGR history (watch for the popups, they are (in my case) only adverts but annoying) Coming soon - rerailing an HAA - the prototype "winch of God" way !
