Hi

For my next small layout I want a small Nuclear transfer yard ,Now I have said on Prototype section I have never really seen Nuclear trains during

the sector era looking at sort of late 80-mid 90,s.

Now my problem is what ready available unit / trailer to sit next to crane I only need one main vehicle so I want it to look at least right?

Even if I have to purchase seperate to make it look right.

I Know there are many helpful RM web members so all I am after is a bit of guidance as there is very little info on internet.

thanks in advanve

Hugh

There's an old topic here with a couple of pics of big Fodens (courtesy of Merfyn Jones) and a link to the Magnox photo gallery although they don't link to specific pics anymore.

There are a couple of pics on Google images but I can't remember now what I typed in to find them. Have a hunt about (but I'm not taking any responsibility if a couple of black Omegas roll up outside your house at 3am...) I'm fairly sure neither of the Fodens in Merfyn's pics are available ready to go, but if you just want something that looks plausible a big 6x4 tractor and a step frame trailer which looks capable of holding 50 tons should do it.

Edit: Try "Magnox Flask Transport" as the search term. Amongst others it brings up this D reg (1986 ?) Volvo:

DAF 95's were used, in the early 90's, I am sure I have seen some pictures of the complete tractor/trailer combos in one of the Trucking magazines some years ago. None of the diecast manufacturers producing the original low roof DAF 95 cab, although Road Transport Images list one, I am not sure if it is current.

There are a couple of DAF 95's I found on Flickr, I think they're in the North Wales Road Transport group:

Knightwing do a Volvo which is a vague approximation, but most road kits are sleeper cabs etc rather than the day cab type.

EDIT: Try Magnoxsites' Photostream

EDIT 2: Martin Pritchard's Photostream is the one, several good pics in there

I always associated the Scammell S24 tractors with this work and they are right on period , but  does anyone do a 1.76 Scammel S24 / Leyland Landtrain,  s'pose could always start from scratch with a Terrier cab !

Don't know of anybody who does one, assuming its not in the RTI catalogue. As you say could make a good project, you could get the chassis and wheels from a corgi Scammell constructor and use an RTI terrier cab, then scratchbuild the bonnet

From the windscreen back that cab is the old 'G' cab, as done by Base Toys. In this case not having the later front doesn't matter since that's going to need scratchbuilding anyway. The same normal control version was also used as the later Scammell tank transporter, so there's probably a kit of that.

BW Model's site might be worth a dig:-

Apart from the flat-fronted Scamell, they do some trailers which could be modified.

The corgi toy landtrain is closer to 1/64 scale however corgi did make a bonneted truck in the superhaulers range along with the ford cargo and man, all were rigids though so a lot of chopping would be needed, I believe it is based on a scania you could probably find some on ebay for a couple of quid.
