Badgers Cross Modern 00 gauge loft layout DCC

My track and points arrived today! this evening I have laid the new loops and had a bit of a test, the new sections make such a difference to running, along with the point motors, I can easily set a route and fire the points to change a train from outside line to inside line whilst another train is roaming the new section on the middle line! Great fun. I shall put some pics up of the new lines and some new rolling stock on Sunday when we have had a proper running session.

In other news, I spent a good few hours sketching a scrap wagon in solidworks during my own time after work and thought it would be rude not to pop out a test on the 3d printer! So 4hrs 27mins print time and six hours of washing away the support material I had one of these... (the bogies are just borrowed from my new seacows, I will be making some bogies to match in the near future)

Edit, this is just a quick iPad pic, I will get better ones over the weekend!

Thanks all for the comments above.

We have had huge running session today, it was really great fun, the track has over doubled in size with the extensions and makes it really interesting, you can have trains going in all directions and on all and sometimes in the same direction on the same line, think we had five trains going around on the three lines and then another shunting in the yard!

A quick video to start with my brothers lovely Class 60 and a combination of my new Seacows and his older ones.

Edit two mistakes with the video, one I put class 66 in the title, doh! And cannot edit it ATM, two I did not switch the point in time, so the first wagon derailed then pings back in line. Oops.

A few pictures and a video, at times there were trains everywhere!

I fitted the model PTA I am making with a kadee at the prototype height, it's a lot higher than the std nem height so I will be making end wagons with couplings at the correct height. The 3D printer has a print resolution of 0.25mm this is evident on angled surfaces and leaves a stepped finish, nothing that cannot be filed down though. Hopefully I will find time to make the bogies this week.

Your 3D printed wagon looks great. Even at .25mm resolution it looks very smooth. Could I ask which 3D printer you have? I keep considering taking the plunge but really can't make my mind up. I love the look of the new Makerbots but they are so expensive, so currently this is top of the "maybe" list : http://thingfarm.com/product.php?id_product=10

Nice work on the scrap wagon.

Have you seen this thread? It's a guy who 3D printed a POA (scrap) wagon in 7mm and by just printing the ribbing, using plain plasticard for the inside body, It saved him a lot of money on his 3D printing, and presumably time as well? It might be worth looking at. It's on page 11.

I use a HP Design jet http://www.hp3dprinting.co.uk/hp-designjet-color-3d-printer.htm. The resolution is not really a problem, the printer itself is very accurate, the build material and removal tank system work very well and the software to print is very simple and fast to use. I have no experience with the cheaper printers but know the old saying, you get what you pay for. The one you linked says it has a print resolution of  0.1mm from a laser cut manufactured board based machine, seems too good to be true when compared to the price of a HP machine!

Hi, I had a good read of the thread, it's an interesting way to print, it would be interesting to know what printer he uses. I have a feeling he choose to not print the sides for more than just cost, he was mentioning problems with the support material hanging onto the finished model.

If i was to print without the sides with the printer I use, the printer would have to fill the gaps/voids in the sides with the support material anyway, this material costs the same as the build material. I will put up a pic of the support material next time when I print a new wagon. I also do not suffer any issue with left over support material, the removal system I use dissolves it all away.

The parts were ready and taken out of the tank this evening, I took them home added kadees, a std coupler and the wheels to the new bogies for a test. The fit is great however there are a few changes I will be making to the bogies, I may get them printed with a higher resolution printer once finalised because the FDM printer I have cannot add in all the detail I want, but, before I go down that route I will paint a pair up and decide from there.

I have added a couple of layers of undercoat to cover up the layered texture created by the printing process and have given the bogies a gloss black finish, I need to decide how I want these weathered and painted, tempted to make them look really old and rusty.

I need to actually crack on with my shed, I just dug the model out, most of the inside has been painted with a gloss finish, I do however need to decide on an exterior colour, any help or ideas for this would be great fully received. Thanks Tom
