RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted October 26, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 26, 2012 Why would they want stone at a sugar beet factory? Ed It's used in the processing of the raw materials, helps separation iirc.
RMweb Gold Revolution Ben Posted October 26, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 26, 2012 Hello Das, My goodness! I was in that neck of the woods yesterday and if I'd realised that was in the area I might have tried to get across to see it! What time did you take the shot? cheers Ben A. RMweb Gold Revolution Ben Posted October 26, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 26, 2012 Hi Das Thanks for the information - if I was in the area today I'd have done my best to get a look. In any event, thanks very much for posting the photos - they're really inspirational! cheers Ben A.
Fat Controller
Given that Chaddesden sidings are just outside the centre of Derby, I presume the stone is being brought there by road from elsewhere; the quarry at Wirkworth, for example, which used to supply quite a few beet refineries in the past. Here's a link to the processing of beet:- http://www.sucrose.com/lbeet.html

Fat Controller
By rail from the Peak district. So Chaddesden just serves as somewhere for the operator (who is it, BTW?) to stable their trains?
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted October 26, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted October 26, 2012 So Chaddesden just serves as somewhere for the operator (who is it, BTW?) to stable their trains? Correct and it's DCR
Fat Controller
Correct and it's DCR Devon and Cornwall Railways? I suppose it's origin was quite close to Chatsworth...

Tim Horn
Its sister loco 56303 was on a stock move off the Mid Norfolk Railway metals last night at Wymondham. Trouble with the crossover outside the box at Wymondham meant that the booked path was scrapped, and in the end the only option was to wait for the Trowse stone train to come through Wymondham, freeing up the loop at Trowse so that the 56 could run round the coaching stock and head back right way round through Wymondham.
