Arthur
Quiz Time Chaps, well more of a question really as I don't know the answer! Clearly a Yorkshire 0-4-0DH, probably ex BR? Can anybody identify the actual locomotive and the location of the photograph? Thanks Arthur

halfwit
Unusual in that it is fitted for the operation of vacum braked stock. All of the BR 02s were vacuum braked from new.
cctransuk
All of the BR 02s were vacuum braked from new. Those marker lights are BR - unless I'm very much mistaken! Regards, John Isherwood.
RMweb Premium TimC Posted November 30, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 30, 2012 The loco is ex BR Class 02 D2858, which after being withdrawn worked at a number of locations: From August 1970 - Hutchinson Estate & Dock Co, Widnes Harbour. From September 1978 - Fisons Fertilizers, Widnes; and then From March 1981 - Lowton Metals, Newton-le-Willows (they bought it for scrap but used it internally instead). The loco is now preserved at the Midland Railway Trust (it arrived there in June 2002) On Flickr http://www.flickr.co...x19/7909700370/ and http://www.flickr.co...6hg/6359033637/ (No location is not mentioned on this one but I'll guess it is Lowton Metals given the nature of the site. The loco has by this time had its bonnet front repainted so this is later than the previous shot). I'm not sure where the location of your photo is but if I had to guess I would say Widnes harbour as the building behind looks like is an engine shed - However, I could be wrong. ailg8048
After Lowton Metals it moved to Butterley Engineering, Ripley in 1986 and I think that's where the photo is taken. It entered preservation in 2002 with the simple and expedient method of driving out the Engineering site, over the crossing and onto MRC rails. Butterly Engineering was accessed from the top of the branch at Swanwick Junction that runs alongside the main shed. regards Alistair
Leander
Yes, the second photo looks like the top yard at Butterley. Now under houses!
Arthur
That's excellent, thanks for all the responses, and in particular to TimC for the identification and history. With that, a little more searching brought me back to RMweb and this; http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/3874-br-class-02-diesel-shunter-in-br-blue/ see post #5. I've pm'd Tom asking if he can say anything about the location. I'll let you know. Thanks again Arthur
Respite
Yep definately at Butterley. I saw it there in this condition. The 'repaint' into red was very badly done, they'd just gone over the old peeling paint with something that looked like red lead.
