grow45
I have recently been given a number of negatives from the late fifties/early sixties taken by somebody who lived in Pittenweem in Fife. One of these is the one below of D30 Kettledrummle . Its a bit of a long shot but is there enough info in the photo to confirm if it as at Leuchars Junction which seems the logical choice given the station name board. Any other suggestions as to locations. Thanks g45
Peter Kazmierczak
Possibly, but by the early 1960s the nameboards were thus: LEUCHARS JUNCTION on two rows The station lamp does look similiar to that at Leuchars - possibly this train is in the St Andrews bay platform. By no means 100% sure though.....
60B
I have a sneaking suspicion this actually Thornton Junction. The platform surface reminds of one of the books on Scottish railways I have that talked about how the surface was gravel and there was a hole in the platform due to subsidence underneath. http://www.railbrit.co.uk/location.php?loc=Thornton%20Junction
'CHARD
Thornton Junction sounds very plausible, given the home base of the photographer.
RMweb Premium 64B Posted December 23, 2012 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 23, 2012 This view of Thornton shows the same lamp posts. Left hand side of the photo also has the old telegraph lines above the loco as per the photo below http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/search_item/index.php?service=RCAHMS&id=52880&image_id=SC664385 see also - http://buckhaven.info/html/steam_train_p_cards.html (and scroll down)
RMweb Gold JohnR Posted December 24, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 24, 2012 62434 was allocated to Dundee Tay Bridge, so it is like that it would have been seen at Leuchars on trips to St. Andrews. However, that line continued around the Fife coast to Thornton Junction. having said that, the loco is clearly at the head of a southbound train, and a train at Thornton to St. Andrews would have been northbound, while the bay at Leuchars Junction is on the south of that station. sulzer27jd
Does not look like Leuchars, particularly the lamps seem wrong. Leuchars did have bays at both the north and the south but both were 1 track. I think this could be Thornton Junction.
grow45
Thanks for the comments/responses. Looks like Thornton Junction is the most likely location. I mentioned in the original post that the photographer lived in Pittenweem. Attached is a photo from the same source of Pittenweem station in case it is of interest. Thanks again
