Red Panniers - hooked - help needed!

Hi folks,

I guess the topic description says it all!  Out in a couple of "local" model shops in the last few months and my wife kept pointing out the Bachmann LT set.  I do have a soft-spot for ex-GWR pannier tanks but had not thought about it in modelling terms away from original green or black.  Suffice to say that I have now bought one and after reading the 'Red Panniers' book, I am hooked.

The big problem is that I know nothing about the Underground system and what to run with the loco.  I've looked around at pics and can see some BR stock in use for materials delivery; also seen what looks like a standard rivetted 16t min, but in LT ownership.  Looked at Radley models site and thread re dogfish/catfish conversions.  Are there any other RTR or readily available kits that are of use?

Many thanks in advance for any help with this.

Regards,

Alex.

Never mind panniers . BR J15's used to run the Fairlop loop  goods trains into the 50's .When I was kid I used to hear steam engines at night and I wondered how they got through the tunnels .it was far later I learned that they ran through on the old surface line from Seven kings .So thats how the coal trucks got to Barkingside coal depot  !!!.The whole system was basically GE /LNER ....What was the question ?

The Red Panniers book is invaluable (sellers other than Waterstones also have it)

Although a cover price of £27 may make you think twice, it's only the cost of a decent coach these days.  I use it a lot as a reference book.

Hi Alex

QUite a few of the members on RMweb model various aspects of the Underground includinf me with my Croxley WRD layout.  Here is a link to a few photos to start you off LT Panniers.

The most well known workings were Neasden- Croxley Tip spoil trains consisting of  2 LT Brake Vans and one or more LT GP wagons which were low on the track - a kit of these wagons us made by Radley Models.

I can see you are  getting  more replies so you are in good company on RMweb

Hi folks,

Thanks for the swift replies.  Metr0land - I've got and read the book, although I gather that it is currently out of print.  Quite intrigued by what would have happened if the originally supplied J52 hadn't been in poor condition; how would it have looked with re-profiled roof and lowered/replaced boiler fittings?  Read elsewhere on here that LT considered replacing the panniers with 08s; I assume they would have needed lowering similarly to the three done for south Wales.

Again, thanks for encouragement.

Regards,

Alex.

Radley Models do a GP wagon and RT Models are doing an RW wagon and a Met brake Van, and I have a feeling that SE Finecast might have done one of those as well.

AA you have seen, I think its possible to make a reasonable HW out of a Cambrian dogfish with a catfish body, and I think a Cambrian Stugeon would make a passable GP (with sides) or RW (without) if you can live with the compromise.

Not sure about the 08's - they def evaluated Class 25 - scroll down this thread:

Is it out of print? The publishers, Lightmoor Press, were at Warley in November, and they had copies for sale. It might have been the end of the print run admittedly.

You need to ask yourself if you want a London Transport themed layout, or a preserved line post 1970 which has a visiting Pannier in LT livery. The Panniers period was quite short spanning the 1960s, so you might find that a bit restrictive if you're going for an LT layout.

Waterstones.com appear to be the only ones with it showing as in stock (assuming you can actually get it when you click on it).

Others I looked at today showed it variously as out of stock or out of print though no doubt a thorough search might dig up a new copy at a specialist seller.

Tempting, isnt it...? I'm wondering what might have happened had the Brill branch remained open, or if BR's 25kV electrification had been more widespread in the late 60's. Electric Blue AL5 through Chalfont & Latimer....?

Or think about the 1,500v DC Woodhead electrification being extended from Sheffield Victoria, down the London Extension to Marylebone. EM1s & 2s (76s & 77s) racing their fellow MetroVic equipped Metropoitan Bo-Bos between Canfield Place and Harrow. Nice!

The LT Museum have it on the shop web pages, and interestingly, the publishers, Black Dwarf Lightmmor (BDL) are also showing it as avaialble on their web site. it may be that BDL are no longer accepting orders from retailers, which would render it "Out Of Print".

There was talk of the authors of Red Panniers doing a follow up covering all LT steam locos. But i gather that nothing's come of that so far.

I've found this amongst the Wife's* Underground book collection:

There isn't alot on the Panniers, jut a few photos and a list of previous numbers. I'm guessing the newer book describes the kind of work they did alot better.

*That's not a misprint, she really does have an interest in the Underground, but more of the Architectural side.
