Modern day freight movements in Wales and the South West

Hi all,

I've seen a load of photos on here recently of FL, GBRf and the old EWS stock moving around the south/south-east of the country and heading up north on intermodals and the like, however there seems to be very little freight movement across Wales and the South West that I can find.

I've tried reading through the Working Time Tables to suss out what's pulling what and where, but I can't make head nor tail of them.

I've heard that 70's can sometimes be spotted at Bristol Parkway and I've seen a couple of EWS 66's down at Portbury Docks or awating permission to proceed past Filton Airfield on the odd occasion that I've driven past at a "good" time, however I can't track down movements in south wales other than WS coal and the GBRf movements at Cardiff Tidal which seem to be mainly steel.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks,

Matt

P.S. For those of you who are following my layout thread, this is mainly because I think that south-wales has limited me to one freight operator (GBRf at Cardiff Tidal/Canton) so I may well move the entire setting somewhere else that I can run multiple liveries... (one of the joys of modelling I guess - easy to relocate an entire area of the country to another with just a couple of licks of paint!)

your best bet would be to join freightmaster if you want to see what runs and where.

the south west is basically dead. There is one DB 66 covering internal china clay and one there IIRC 3 days a week for a trip out of the west. Occasional cement to moorswater. I'm sure the captain or winterbourne can tell you more...

Wales is better with coal and steel and some intermodal to wentloog, but I couldn't tell you much more.

Matt,

.

As you appear to be just the other side of 'the bridge' why not take a day out and visit the area you choose to model ?

.

You don't need to go too far into Wales to get a flavour, may I recommend spending a few hours on the overbridge at Bishton, less than 10mins from the SSC.

.

Here you could see FGW passenger trains, ATW  and also Cross Country units.

.

As for freight, you can catch DB(S) steel, oil, stone and coal, DRS intermodal, Freightliner coal, stone and intermodal, GBRf scrap, Colas wood, and in addition 'spot workings' and the occasional Notwork Rail yellow things.

.

Living in South Wales, I fail to understand your claim that your layout is limited as far as diverse operators are concerned.

.

I would advise a bit of research ... as mentioned above, a copy of Freightmaster would help.

.

In addition, there are a several Yahoo Groups devoted to movements and sightings in South Wales, and others that list details of workings (and freight train consists) further afield; these include:-

The South Wales Page:-

Rail Gen South Wales:-

Todays Railways magazine also runs occasional articles on the South Wales scene, both freight and passenger.

SSC - Second Severn Crossing?

I'm down in the Bristol area for a couple of days soon and a visit to Westerleigh is pencilled in during my spare time. Bishton also looks like a good bet.

Cheers,

Mick
