Vulcan locos for export at Liverpool docks 1954

From many of the documents I have seen whilst looking up locos built in Leeds they usually say delivered to Liverpool for export and a date.  There are probably similar records for Vulcan.  Fortunately there were no way as many locos as Glasgow or Leeds built so it should be fairly easy to find a list for a specific year.  The angle to the number plate on the steamer was a bit too much to give any clues.  It looks a bit like the types of locos used in India or South Africa (or one of the colonian countries).

As this points you to the list of locos built - reference to these in the Liverpool archives..

I'd agree with the African theory

First (steam) one looks like something intended for the Sudan or Uganda (i.e. not a Garratt).

Diesel could be for Egypt (the West Germans were building similar-looking designs for the Egyptians as well at about this time) - the nose is very English Electric.

I think they may be the RENFE 77xx Electrics - the date is spot on and they have the classic EE export cabs http://www.enuii.org/vulcan_foundry/photographs/locomotives/Electric/Renfe%20Vulcan%20English%20Electric.JPG , alternatively the Victorian Railways L class http://www.pjv101.net/fts/u01/bl102.jpg around the same time. The Sudan diesels were built just a bit too late.

actually I think you may be right, has the more angular shape and the covered up grills match, as does the cab roof shape and front lights.

there was a Brazilian version according to this.

check out 11mins50 for the Spanish version and the Brazilian version at 16.10, it looks like the Spanish version is delivered in its colours so maybe thats a clue too?

The steamer I am 90% sure is an East African 31xx class 2-8-4, the cab, running boards, tender all match well, number plate is the right size and shape.

3101 to 3146 were built at Vulcan in 1955-56. The 30xx class was very similar and built at the same time, but by North British.

Diesel looks very similar to the Rhodesian DE2 but cab door vents are missing so probably one of the other options people have mentioned.
