This is a compact pictorial 'history' of Midland carraige development from 1916 using 4mm scale models, some of which are currently being built from stock-etchings for my layout, Greenfield..  http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/58427-greenfield-in-the-mid-1950s/

A run of six experimental carraiges came out during the final phase of MR corridor coach building commencing in 1916. Although on standard 54ft underframes, they had full eliptical roofs instead of clerestory roofs, and were 9ft wide instead of 8ft 6ins. Steel was used for the coach ends instead of timber and, according the David Jenkinson (Midland Carraiges - OPC), there is some evidence that the Great Western was consulted on this form of construction. Although not repeated, these coaches in many ways set the pattern for future construction.
