Hello all,

SATURDAY 2ND FEBRUARY

SUNDAY 3RD FEBRUARY

10 to 4 BOTH DAYS

Its the third year of the 2nd Bishop Auckland Scout Group Model Weekend, where childrens models form the centre piece of the displays around the hall. Each of the sections has made models to compete and gain a prize having been voted for by the public. All the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts that have made them will pass elements in their sections badgework and so gain badges for taking part. Alongside these will be a display from our guests this year, the Lanchester Model Boat club with working scale models that will be able to be viewed.

Most here will be interested in the 5 Model Railway Layouts that will demonstrate modelling in different scales, while also there will be a demonstration on kit builting and weathering.

The Model Railway Layouts that will attend are due to be:

Bishop Auckland

- Preservation meets the National Network in this take on what the station could have become had the towns station and the preserved railway worked out a little differently.

Brafferton

- A new model to the exhibtion circuit. This is a 17ft by 2ft O gauge layout, incorporating a nice North Eastern scene. Working DCC lights, sound and smoke should keep everyone entertained.

Nuts and Bolton Mk. 2

- A layout that is almost pocket sized. This small layout is one that demonstrates skill in shunting and that not all layouts need to be big. Set in the 1980s.

Magdalene Lane

- a layout set near Durham in 1930s. Here you will see LNER goods engines playing their trade.

Bad Klienstadt

- a first for the Scout Group. A Continental Model Railway, showing the various types and operations of model and engines from over the shores. Here there will be an example of a superb German steam railway layout.

For any children going, there are hands on challenges, where you need to build a boat to take weights out of plasterscene, or a tower out of spegetti and Marshmallows. Winners of these over the weekend gets a prize!

Previous years have seen the exhibition well supported. Refreshments are available for those that visit, with toilet facilities and disabled access available. Parking is slightly limited at the Scout Hall, but nearby car parks are available around the corner and at Morrisons and Asda supermarkets. The nearby council car parks are free on Sunday.

This event is run by the Scout Assosiation, for the benefit of getting people to view the models that the children have made. Any member of any section and any Scout Group from anywhere at all that arrives in uniform to view gets free admission.

Prices for others that arrive are £5 for families (of 2 adults, 2 children) with adults at £2, children at £1.

The Scout Hall is off a side road off Kingsway, Bishop Auckland, which runs behind the main high street. Access is on an access road next to the Nursing Home that has been built on the former football ground. Anyone with a satnav the postcode is: DL14 7JN - but this will take you to Victoria Avenue, the residential street one next to the hall.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Will answer them as best I can. Hope to see you there!

Brian Harland and a collegue are bringing the Brafferton layout. They had Langton there last year which was stunning and thankfully have agreed to attend following a change to the line up this year. Brilliant that such people help us support the event thats put on for the children and the Scout Group.

Just about all the preperations and paperwork for the event is complete. The posters are going up around town, not that the town centre is much now thanks to an out of town development. The Cubs are really excited about the models they have made and a few plan more finishing touches to theirs for that extra bit of detail!

Meanwhile the Tea Room team this year are sorting what offerings will be available for the public.. but I am thinking scones of some kind will be on the menu after the comments last years and the race to buy the last ones.

A bit far for me to come, in uniform or otherwise, but I wish the Group well with the exhibition.

Shame Adrian!

Maybe its something your group can consider. While not supposed to be a money earner for us, its generated some funds which no doubt every Scout Group needs. Ours has taken on the tag, of Scout Rail by some akin to a few other Scout Groups that are doing a similar idea, or just putting on a model railway exhibition. For us the attraction of there being many different models adds to the appeal of people and having displays of the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts work that they have then used to pass off badgework is an added plus.

Our first time we had some come from Skipton, so heres hoping others venture out... all are welcome!

Breaking News... should that be Baking News...

Nevermind the models on display this coming weekend, news from the Kitchen Crew is that scones this year will feature the much celebrated Cheese Scones, but with the debut of Cranberry and Cineamon Scones too along side the traditional fruity ones. The new ones are absolutely delicious...

Advance orders for them are now being taken!

Nice to get in out of the winter cold and start the season with friends at the show. It isn't the biggest, but the atmosphere of an enthusiastic team and the Cubs & Scouts is hard to beat - and of course the catering cannot be bettered. If you're looking for something to do, go for an hour or so - Nutt & Bolton Mk2 is an inspiration in particular - well, it is for me!

Hope the weekend's a good one for you all David, well done.
