What a lovely model; about the only thing I could perhaps say is that the sheep seem a lot cleaner than most 'Valleys' sheep I've seen..

Yes ,i thought that myself, they must have been in the dip bath in the last couple of days, may be some thinned down brown/black matt is required

Are you something of a "connoisseur" of sheep then, Mr Controller? ;)

I forgot to ask you Brain, but how long did it take you to get the layout to this stage?

Did you find wiring much easier, without any points to worry about?

Cheers

....more pics please!

Hi Marc

I started the layout in October after selling Ranson Bridge,as you know I had already built the buildings some time ago.

Without points,I only have the dcc bus and 1drop per road a bus for the lights,......yes much easier.

Regards from your mate Brain.....I mean Brian

Lovely, just need an engineering stores wagon in the nearest siding and you've got Abercynon to a t.

Dai Davies

Hi Dai would that be an old black clerestory stores wagon/coach ???

Thanks

Brian

I am just building a nu cast Taff Vale A tank to go on the layout for the Llantwit Fardre show in April

Some more cracking shots there Brian :)
I did mention that I thought you had a good sense of "space" about the layout
and I think it comes through in those latest shots
- particularly in the top one

Many viewers may not fully appreciate how small the layout is,
and just how "Big" you've made it look!
I think part of that trick, aside from not having any points to eat up space,
but also, don't overcrowd the layout with too much stock

On Ranson Bridge, you could get away with that, but not here
Abercynnon Fach deserves a leisurely glimpse at locomotives and stock
sat in a very natural-looking environment.....

Yes, I agree a few engineers wagons could make an appearance
it would be a nice touch.....
I've also seen several nice shots (Aberdare springs to mind) where a line of brake vans is stabled....
Another nice touch?

Cheers again matey
Marc

Edit: I recall you showing me your model of the depot building, a couple of years ago
I just wanted to say, I'm glad you made a home for it

Hello Brian, If my memory serves me right, Abercynon had a couple of 'specialist' wagons of the Mess/tool van brigade. I think Blacksmith used to have kits of them, but possibly a Python would do. It's 40 years since I last saw them, and I was too young to know what they were.

I found Abercynon to be an annoying shed. As a Merthyr boy I was peeved that Abercynon had a proper coaling stage, and Merthyr didn't. Hey ho.

Lovely little layout, wished I lived closer to see it at first hand.

Regards, Dai Davies

PS I've noticed the odd RMweb comment on Merthyr girls -- I presume they were mistaking them for the numerous visitors to Merthyr that happened over a weekend!

Dai, Merthyr Girls have been the butt of jokes for as long as I can remember....

Down here in Cardiff, we also sometimes take the same tone with "Grangetown Girls"

However, having been out with 1 of each - I can safely say the rumours are not true! ;)

Back to the matter of railways (far more important) I've developed a liking for engineers stock myself

As a lad visiting Canton, in the 70's there were usually several coaches,

painted in blue, with a large red band along the middle...

I'm not sure exactly what these vehicles were - some sort of test cars presumably?

I agree, such items add interest to a layout, as you don't see them too often

Brian, I'm sure a search on HMRS Paul's website will be fruiful....

I think you're nearer the mark on this Dai.  I don't recall Abercynon shed playing host to engineer's wagons back in steam days although I'm reasonably sure that it had some breakdown vans and on checking I find that Abercynon had a fairly extensive breakdown area stretching from Taffs Well (exclusive) to Porth (inclusive) and right up to Merthyr High St plus various branches including right up to Pontsticill jcn (exclusive) so it would probably have had a fairly complete set of vans.

Incidentally dunno about Merthyr girls but Llandaff wasn't too bad in that regard I seem to recall, and Newport was even better.

Hi Brian, just found your thread. Shed layouts don't normally do it for me as most seem to be about the stock rather than the surroundings which interest me more. You seem to have managed to give equal attention to both and the results are simply stunning. The weathering on your buildings is subline and the detailing really brings it to life. Love it and hope to catch it at a show near me sometime.

Hi Nick....thanks ,coincidently I have catching up on Much Murkle over the last week or two, excellent ,I particularly like the station building loads of interest to look at ,on this building alone.

Hello Brian,          http://paulbartlett....com/wrdeptcoach

Try this link; Look at p11 and check wagons at Machynlleth. IIRC, they are similar to the ones at Abercynon, but I'm sure there'll be RMwebbers out there who can say yea or nay. They had red ends, but I can't remember the sides!

Cheers, Dai

Thanks Dai I will look around for a mess wagon
