Fitting a Heljan Class 27 with a MX645R ZIMO Sound

This is how I went about fitting a MX645R ZIMO Sound decoder and a High Base speaker in a Heljan Class 27.

I had been to the Glasgow Show and had been speaking to those nice DEMU and Scottish Modeler guys and had made enquiries how to fit a sound decoder in a Heljan 27 a doddle they said, so off I went and bought a 27 and a MX645R ZIMO Sound decoder sound with a .90 High Base speaker from the Digitrain stand.

At home the first step was to remove The Heljan Class 27 (number D5348) from the box it had a few surprises it was missing a wiper blade and the fuel tanks fell off; did it know I was going to remove them at one stage!! It also looked as if the body had been removed as it was not fitting as tight as I would have liked, this was worrying as I bought it as new and did not examine it before I bought it; Note to my self let the credit card burn in the pocket and examine things more closely in future!!

I put it on my test track and it ran okay, so on to the bit which no doubt throws the warranty out the window.

I removed the body, which is held in four places by small built in clips; a few old plastic cards help here to pries the body shell off.

As I said before the fuel tanks were already off but the four clips were fine so I assumed it would go back on okay.

The speaker would be placed in the Fuel tanks and the wires would be fed up through a small hole in the chassis .

I cut out the centre of the tanks using an old blade cutter, which was heated on the gas stove and basically melted the plastic away with it.

Cleaned up with sandpaper and a dermal also drilled four holes in the bottom of the tank

Very nice Eddie!

Not been in touch for a while (every day life has caught me up). I've started ridding a motorbike so all my attention has been on that and the kids.

We'll need to get together, I'd like to hear your 27 in the flesh alongside my 26. I bit the bullet and pulled the trigger on a black five and sound decoder (yet to be fitted). I've talked about it for long enough. I'm just waiting on some 1w resistors coming in order to fit the firebox flicker.

Take care,

Mark

Hi,

Really nice sound on the vid! I bought a Zimo sound chip for the Heljan CL26 at Glasgow and fitted the speaker in the roof under the fan on a bed of 'blue tack'. My CL 27 has a LokSound V4 decoder by Howes.

Bill.

Hi bill I bought a small round speaker to do the same as you have done but I went for the HB speaker and it was too thick to fit under the fan so went for above which was a lot easier than I thought.
