RMweb Premium uax6 Posted February 27, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 27, 2013 Railway Characture lines by Mike Collins has a picture of the one they used around Huddersfield in the 60's. A converted cattle wagon by the look of it. The ISBN is 1-84401-580-7 Athena Press. Worth getting it (and it's other volume To Busy To Delegate) as they are full of the Human side of the railway, and they make you p*ss yourself laughing! eastwestdivide
Leeds or Harrogate area, December 1981, something a bit different for tunnel inspection: DE 960609 an LNER Sturgeon-type thing (?) with a grampus, then DM 511752 an LMS van and a Mk1 coach, DB 975617
coachmann
I filmed just such a train after inspection of Ffestiniog Tunnel about 1990 but cannot upload and I took no photos. Maybe Merfyn Jones of this parish took photos....? Most of the stock in the train was a chalky olive green colour including an ex-LMS Stanier staff coach. RMweb Premium HillsideDepot Posted February 27, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 27, 2013 Sean, I've done DW150144 the Bristol Division coach from a Hornby Collett brake. Not as easy as it at first seems as the GW had left and right handed brakes (so the corridor could stay on the same side throughout the train) and the Hornby version is the opposite hand to DW150144 (well, it would be, wouldn't it?). There are a few pictures of DW150144 about the web, and when the eye is "tuned in" it pops up occasionally in the background of other shots. Much of the roof modification is guesswork, and the whole model really needs a reworking in the light of scraps of information since gleaned, and to straighten some of my wonky modelling! As for 'decent' photos, if anyone has anything of DW150144, "every little helps"! Coach bogie
The GWR/WR had a converted Dean 40ft brake van W14476 . Being a low roof it was fitted with various platforms, rails and gauges. Mike Wiltshire

I don't think this photo of 47330 at Blaenau Ffestiniog is mine (too good for one of mine) The Bangor district tunnel train, was not just for inspection but also repairs, like pointing. Slow speed control locos were used if available. If you were working for any length of time in the tunnel, a smaller loco was preferable. I know, I worked in Blaenau tunnel with a 47 and a DMU in there at once. I have some photos of the individual wagons if you want, I can scan them. Merf. sean hpw
Hi Merf, If you can scan the stock images you have it will be a great help, I am building at least 1 tunnel inspection train. Thanks for the help all Sean

Lyddrail
Sean, Most likely not your period or area but I modelled a Southern Region tunnel inspection train for my early 1990s layout. A ex SR bogie van and a Hastings width staff coach. Cheers.
Merfyn Jones
Nice shot of the Tonbridge train Paul. Our one up here was a bit more 'Heath Robinson' The Bangor district tunnel train, which changed over the years, consisted of the following in - 19/02/1989 47054 952078 984552 985464 YXO 990909 986948 990559 990851 770804 DM395906 953663 and 30/09/1990 08737 951246 395906 787297 985464 996444 978528 954511 the 12 ton van replaced by the ex ferry van and Grampus by Turbots, and 10/04/1994 47341 460484 460815 Now gone air brake. No the 08 was not a model, this IS, but it does show the track in that area maybe needs the 'Greenfield' treatment. Merf.
coachmann
In case anyone is interested, the LMS Stanier coach amongst Merfyn Jones's images started ife as a D1905 corridor brake third. A simple way of producing this is to use a completely knocked down kit by Dapol and overlay Comet Models etched sides. Roof vents do not need altering but the batteryboxes need removing. The sheeted over window need not be done unless one is proficient with a soldering iron and at cutting sheet metal.

Merfyn Jones
Tunnel Train Chester D Heath.jpgWater Tank Tunnel Train Chester D Heath.jpgHi I have a couple of photos taken at Chester hope they are ok David Wexford And the same vehicles as above with the adition of the water tank and other wagon, the ferry van having been given a coat of Provincial Railways dark blue. These I hadn't caught myself. Merf. Bangor engineers had closed by then so the train got transfered to Chester by the look of it.
johnw1
This gauging van would make an interesting vehicle on a 1970's layout http://www.flickr.com/photos/pics-by-john/5608469501/
