Tom Bayford
Evening All, I am trying to fin the correct switches for manual operation of points so i can motion the points through a wire in tube and at the same time change the polarity of the forgs of the peco points so i can get some reliable running the idea for the switches i have borrowed from herehttp://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/826/entry-8068-wit-you-lookin-at-gem-mercontrol/ and i have had a quick look for the switches and have found these http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/slide-switches/7118385/ and i was wondering if anyone has used the switches as i only intend to use them for frog polarity not signals would these be ok or am i barking up the wrorng tree. Many thanks in advance, Tom.
rodshaw
I've used SPDT slide switches like the one in the second photo. I drilled a horizontal hole through the knob for the operating wire to go through.
Tom Bayford
Thanks Rodshaw is there a paticular reason for using SPDT?
Grovenor
SPDT is enough for one frog switch, but on the other hand DPDT are more common and its always useful to have a spare contact and it allows for operating a crossover off one switch. Personally I would go for this type, holes in the solder tags help with wiring and the tapped mounting holes save struggling to fit nuts on the mounting bolts. Regards Keith. Suzie
This is a better switch from RS. Two poles are handy in DC layouts because the second pole can be used for power routeing, or if not required for that at least you can just provide a dead section leading to the frog to prevent shorts if accidentally getting too close to the frog when the point is set against the train. Tom Bayford
Thanks you both of you ordered switches got to wait for the wire then there should be some 'progres' soon
BG John
I've used toggle switches with a hole drilled through the lever. There is more metal in them, and they seemed tougher than slide switches. I'm hoping I can reuse them on my new layout.
Tom Bayford
Thanks for the input John i think ill see how the slide switches go but may look to experiment in the future
