Bennerley Junction - N Gauge

Anyone who visits New Railway Modellers may have already seen my layout, Bennerley junction.

It is based on the real life Bennerley junction on the Erewash Valley Line, which features the impressive Bennerley viaduct and for many years an ironworks, opencast mine and then a coal screening depot.

I will be modelling 1980 - 1992 ish which allows for a huge amount of variety. Traffic includes MGR workings hauled by 37s, 47s, 56s 58s and 60s. Parcels traffic, DMU, HST and loco hauled passenger services along with lots of other freight and departmental workings, including several out of era/region 'interlopers' to keep things interesting!

The layout features:

4x boards of 1m each. 1m either end is a cassette system, leaving 2m for the scenic area.
Tracke is code 55 finescale. Slow action point motors are included driven by the controller.
Layout is fully DCC.
Contain working LED signals with block detection and lit buildings/yard area.
Baseboards fold together to help with storage and transportation.

I have a good amount of stock, including BR blue railfreight and sector locos, current wants are a Dapol HST, a Class 60 and A Class 59 when it comes along. Most of my rolling stock is RTR, although I have built several NGS?Parkwood/Dundas/Chivers kits and I've also converted a Mk 1 into an Escort Coach using Electra vinyls.

Current projects are a fleetline breakdown crane (theres a pic of it partially complete below), a BHE Class 128 kit, an N-Train Lab 9 'Hydra' kit on a Farish chassis and converting the coal building (the big grey thing) from the current crude cardboard representation to one made from corrugated plastic which hopefully will look more realistic.

Nice layout!

I particularly like the overbridge with what appears to be an abandoned railway line on it.  Have you started the replacement coal loader yet?  I'd be very interested in following your progress with that - any chance of some photos?

cheers

Ben A.

Hi guys, many thanks for your kind words, very encouraging. To answer a couple of questions:

a) The breakdown crane is a combination of the Fleetline/GEM Ransome & Rapier 45T steam crane along with some Dapol breakdown vans and a smaller flesichmann (I think) crane painted yellow. The transfers are a combination of my own and modelmaster. I'm curently working on getting some breakdown staff/tool coaches done using Adams superb vinyls, more coming on that soon.

Ben,

The abdandoned bridge is the Bennerley viaduct, my layout is based on this area with a bit of modellers licence! Hopefully Lenton Sands won';t mind me showing his photo of the viaduct and coal plant after the track was lifted (photo tank late 80s early 90s).

A quick google searc h for 'Bennerley junction' or Bennerley Viaduct will bring up plenty of pics :)

As for the coal building, I'm not building a new one, just cladding it with corrugated plastic in an attempt to make it look more realistic, the building itself is actually lit using LEDs. I'll take some pics this weekend and share.

The pictures above show the scenic section without the fiddle yards, unfortunately I don't have space to have everything set up :(

I don't know if anyone is interested, but here's some pics of my kit built stock:

N Gauge Rudd (Parkside Dundas Kit I think)

N Gauge Seahorse ZCA from Chivers Finelines (superb kit)

N Gauge Clam Ballast Wagon again a Dundas kit I think

NGS Gresley full braker painted in BR blue. I had a nightmare with the handrails etc on this kit as I found them delicate and iffdly (and broke them!) when I get round to it I'll fit wire handrails and finish her off. Shown close coupled to an NGS Stove R. Along with some old Lima Syphon Gs this will form a dilapidated old parcels train!

A repainted Trix brakevan into Coal Sector 'livery' based on a pic from Paul Bartletts superb wagon site

An MOD Escort Coach using a farish Mk 1 and Electra vinyls

Parkwood (I think) Warwell with a PG Models APC. I also have some warflats to finish. The MOD train isn't exactly prototypical for this line but I run what I like :)

Repainted 'RFD' Peco Brakevan. Transfers are made on my computer using laser decal paper. this brings up the rear of my MOD train

Something Ben might appreciate, my NGS Inspection Saloon being propelled by a Dapol Class 26. Love this little model

Another MGR train, veryu very common this line, Dapol Class 58n up front..

My NGS shark ballast van sat in the coal siding (this area has since been improved with more bushes, rubbish and fencing)
