Shadow
Very good. The weathering and tones on the buildings and rolling stock make for a very realistic appearance indeed. Did you do anything clever to the photo to gain that rather convincing old photograph quality? Nothing special with the photo's, just taken on a cheap tablet and converted to black and white. I was going to show originals but colour quality is not good when used with neon lighting. (Also, I've saved the b&w ones over them!) Here's some other colour ones.
mullie
The RM Web image editor is quite good as it is the freely available Pixlr. As I work on a Mac I also use the Fotor editor which is a free app. This has some really good black and white settings as seen on my threads. Happy Christmas. Shadow
Not done a lot over the last few months. Had to replace the cold water tank in the loft and that necessitated the relocation of lots of carefully stored items that will never be reused (I.e. Rubbish!). The model then became inaccessible. Getting the Xmas decorations down made my clear it up again and relocate all the items back to there original storage positions. Looking at the model, I wasn't happy with the half relief bridge. When I last worked on it I sprayed it with enamel varnish, but unfortunately it discoloured the Scalescenes brick paper. Ended up with white patches. Also, looks like it had started to peel in places as well. Whilst down the library just before Xmas, (yes, we do still have a library with real books in them ) I came across a book called "Building Bridges and Viaducts for Model Railways" by Bob Alderman. This rekindled the interest and the old bridge soon looked like this. After eventually finding the embossed styrene sheet that I had carefully hidden away whilst tidying up(!) it has progressed through the following stages. First time I've used embossed sheet so quite happy with the outcome. Hopefully going to continue over the next few days and see what it looks like when I've added a few more details and it gets a coat of paint.
Shadow
Had a few more hours today and got on with teh bridge details. Cutting the small detail strips row by row! Close up of detail. And temporarily positioned on layout. Coping stones and painting next. Would it be best to give a coat of grey primer first, or just go at it with the acrylics? mullie
I always undercoat everything made of plastic, it provides a key for any further painting and shows up any blemishes. On this type of model, once undercoated and I would use a grey mortar colour, I would rub it down then apply top coat. I either use acrylics or have had good results with water colour pencils. Pencils will need sealing with matt varnish which provides a good key for weathering. Bridge looks really good. mullie
Any particular undercoat? (Halfords Grey, Humbrol Acrylic Grey Primer, etc.....!) I do have an airbrush, so could use that. Dave I use a grey rattle can, it depends what I can get hold of that doesn't generate a lot of fumes as I can't use high fume paint of any kind. At the moment, a lot of the spray cans I have are Humbrol though my grey is currently B&Q as these are easily available locally. I have used Games Workshop paints in the past but these are no longer so easy to get hold of and I've heard they are no longer as good. I use artists acrylics for paints mixed with just about anything I can find - talc, ash, charcoal, artists pastel chalks ( as matting agents and to add texture) and anything I can find. I also use black ink, pencils and pastels.. I spray outdoors if the weather is good or in the garage with the door slightly up if windy (garage faces north. weather mainly from the south west in these parts) I try not to spray paints if it is damp. Don't own an airbrush. Brickwork- I would spray a thin coat of gray, rub it down, then colour with either dry brush paints or pencils. If pencils I seal with matt varnish before weathering. Moving to deepest Dorset has made me very creative as modelling paints are not easy to get locally, now can't be sent through the post due to tighter regulations and I can only use low fume paints. Have to say I keep looking at Dunmow as a track plan, has loads of potential and is an area I know well. Hope this helps. Martyn
mullie
Forgot to mention that I also use Tamiya paints and sprays- my LNER brown is a Tamiya colour
Shadow
Had a play with a sample to check some colours. Quite like the top shades, although the bottom might be ok if a bit darker.

DSC09565 (1).JPG Excellent job on that bridge, especially on the arches. The top colour seems closest to your original. I agree the top and bottom shades are the best. Perhaps combinations of the 2? Shadow
A bit more painting. Taken under a different light. Still like the top right best, but that dark at the bottom is growing on me! They all look at bit more red in real life. The white middle bottom was trying to add some light mortar. Didn't really work, need some more practice with this! colour corrected! mullie
My preferred way is to do the mortar first, usually using an aerosol then dry brush over the top- I find I have much more control of the paint though I know we all have different ways of working. Looking very promising.

Shadow
Well, after almost a year of doing nothing productive I bought a Cambrian Models LNER 6 plank open at Southampton Model show last weekend. Found/made some time to put it together yesterday. Quite an easy build, I hadn't made any of their models before, just a few Parkside ones.

Shadow
Pssttt, it’s September......????? It's now January! And a little bit of progress has been achieved over the Christmas period. I'll post some pictures later. I've modified the small warehouse by changing from 1/2 relief to more of a 3/4 relief version. Viewing the end never quite looked right, looks much better now.

Shadow
Wasn't totally happy with the original model in half relief so decided to add some ends by making a mould of the (opposite) end and taking a couple of plaster casts from that. Trimmed and glued, and then painted to match. Added a new roof to the office section, and plonked back on! Also added an stage/platform to front. Think that is an improvement.
George Hudson
This is a gem and that plastic work is really first class. Structures look like they weigh a tonne. Andrew
