romford gears

I have a loco i built in the 70's but i need a worm to match the wormwheel which has 40 teeth and is about 14.5 mm diameter i assume that this is 40-1.

The reason i can't fit a complete gear set is the loco has double frames and outside cranks and it would mean breaking the frames and unsoldering the cranks,

it could turn into a complete rebuild, any help would be much appreciated..

Why do you need to replace the gear wheel? Are teeth of the gear broken?  If not surely all you need to do is find a worm that has the same tooth spacing as your gear. This gear looks like a 64 DP, so any 64 DP will fit it. It will probably be best to check your wheel against a range of available worms, but 64 DP was a common standard at the time this loco was built.

Going by that photo I would say it is a Romford gear. They kept the gear diameter the same, and altered the ratios by increasing/decreasing the number of teeth and their profile; as well as changing the worm to match.

See my earlier post re Markits.
