brian777999
I have been thinking about modelling N gauge lately and I am curious if anybody makes etched brass or white metal locomotive kits ? I am interested in LMS or pre- grouping steam locos. I have done a few searches but I am not finding anything. UPDATE : I did find these. http://www.lytchettmanor.co.uk/N-gauge_locomotives.html http://www.worsleyworks.co.uk/N/n_gauge_steam_locomotives.htm Are there others ? 2mm Andy
Brian, A few other names that spring to mind are Langley models, BH Enterprises and Foxhunter Models. The first two can be found by doing a google search for their name. I'm not sure if Foxhunter are still producing kits - the N gauge society list some Foxhunter products in their shop listing (sales to members only unfortunately). Worsley Works kits are 'scratch aid' etches, in that you don't get all the parts needed to build the loco, but what you do get will give you a good start. Others may be able to list a few more kit producers. Andy

If you want to build locos then it makes sense to go 2FS. Even if you find kits in N, nobody makes any wheels. The 2mm Association has a comprehensive range of wheels, chassis kits for proprietary locos etc. Jerry

And the 2mm Association lists a black 5 and a 4F kit. http://2mm.org.uk/products/shops.php?shop_num=3 Another name that springs to mind is Bob Jones' Fencehouses Model Foundry, but more likely for NER locos than LMS. I'm not aware of a list anywhere online for Bob's stuff though. You would probably be wise to scan the back numbers of the 2mm magazine and other publications for someone who has successfully put your chosen kit together before spending time and money. Some kits are a lot better than others. Regards, Andy

He does some large LMS types along with conversation chassis for some of the RTR offerings.

RMweb Premium Kris Posted June 28, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 28, 2013 So the 2FS people build their own track as well ? What sort of couplers do they use ? Track is hand built, but with easitrack that is not a problem. Points are obviously a little more complex. Couplers are a mixed bag, but DG are quite common. RMweb Gold Donw Posted June 28, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 28, 2013 The 2mmScale Association provides a lot to make it possible to model in 2mm without being a skilled engineer. Track not just the parts but also some very helpful jigs, locos not just the bits like wheels and gears but also a number of etched chassis to make a replacement for N gauge models. It won't suit those who just want to buy and run but for those who enjoy making models the help is there. Don

No actual kits but N Brass do a lot of LMS fittings, if you decide to have a go at scratchbuilding. You don't automatically have to think of using brass & nickel-silver either. A lot of people have sucessfully built loco bodies out of plasticard. Discarded felt pen bodies make useful boiler material. Mark

RMweb Gold 2mmMark Posted June 30, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 30, 2013 Is anybody producing 2mm Transfers/Rub-ons? The N Gauge Society took over the Modelmaster range of transfers. Sales are to members only. There's also Fox Transfers http://www.fox-transfers.co.uk. and Cambridge Custom Transfers http://www.cctrans.freeserve.co.uk/ Mark

RMweb Gold 2mmMark Posted July 2, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 2, 2013 There can be corporation tax issues when a specialist society starts selling to people other than members. When an organisation runs on volunteer labour, it's best to keep the workload as light as possible. Dealing with HMRC can be onerous so if there's no need for it, the advantage is obvious! Plus it encourages membership. I'm sure there are members of the 2mm Scale Association who have joined to get access to our components to use in other scales, such as 4mm narrow gauge.
