Don’t know about motoring nostalgia, but Montrose High St circa 1977 brings back some memories.. I did the old Manpower Services Commission “Basic Rig Crew” course there and look how THAT turned out.... it was also my introduction to the principle of “a girl in every port”, about which the less said the better...

Splendid news, it's always a relief...

As a bit of a bonus, the MoT examiner (who remembers me from the era when I was always bringing the 635 in for its annual) recommended a specialist Citroen workshop in Friern Barnet, set up by a French fella who did his training on CXs and other old Cits. If I can get the CX booked in there for the rear pads and exhaust, plus the annual fluids check/change, there'll be no need to wait for Brodie's - which is like applying to join a golf club where you'll never be admitted as a member.

That yalla tin front Leyland decker in Montrose High Street appears to say Northern on its flank.

Since this was classic green SMT country, it must have been on a hired summer 'awayday' from post PTE all yellow Tyne and Wear.

I once misguidedly took a "getting to know you" bunch of new students to Montrose for a couple of days. It proved a grim Hobbit warren of a SYHA and the whole town shut down at closing time.

Kendal was always popular - the hardy ones discovered they could drink all night on Oxenholme station! But they were good for nothing in the easy group tasks set next day.

PS

Of those just posted rarities, one looks to have a Lea Francis grill, the other is mystifying! Iti ?

Another Edit: Is that upper roadster a Michelotti body on something - possibly even a Jag (coz of the round badge down on the nose).

The 404 looks very rakish and the paint combo on the VW bus really suits it, most I've seen round here favour the pastel shades. The 'golden brown' of the top half is similar to what I have in mind if I do a colour change on the green Jap Mini auto - talking of which I had a chat with the lads down at Southam Mini & Metro Centre today about having an engine and manual gearbox built for it, a more detailed chat will ensue in a few weeks time. While I was there they had a customer's Mk1 on the rolling road, the noise was 'rather good' as was the car itself, which had a spaceframe rear suspension arrangement in place of the conventional rear subframe. Also up on the ramps were a pair of early Mk1 Cooper Ss in tartan Red / Old English White and Almond Green / Old English White respectively. My fix for the day was thus much enjoyed!

Definitely Michelotti flavoured, at least. I doubt if you'd get a DOHC six under that bonnet, though, without more of a bulge. That would tend to suggest against a Sabre as well. Happy to be corrected though.

Special bodied TR4? That screen has a distinctly Triumph feel to it.

Yes, it does have “Northern” on its side, but it’s nothing to do with Tyne and Wear.  This yellow “Northern” bus is shown in its natural habitat.  The buses that operated in Fife, Perth and between Dundee and Aberdeen were operated by W. Alexander & Sons Ltd.  The branding Alexanders used was that the buses in the area between Dundee and Aberdeen were branded “Northern” and painted yellow and cream, the ones around Perth were “Midland” and were cream and blue and the buses operating in Fife (which, if I recall correctly, were branded “Fife”) were red and cream.

That bus belonged to Walter Alexander & Sons (Northern) Ltd. one of three operating companies of Walter Alexander and Sons Ltd, the other two being Walter Alexander & Sons (Fife) Ltd and Walter Alexander & Sons (Midland) Ltd. Here's a closer picture of a Walter Alexander & Sons (Northern) Ltd decker, taken in Aberdeen - https://www.flickr.com/photos/william-walker/17930160935/

Very sorry this 'Old Fert' always confuses Montrose with Melrose.

Melrose is the sleepy little place in the Borders my new students objected to.
