Southport Road Goods

These are some first pics of SOUTHPORT ROAD GOODS. It is a Liverpool set micro layout in which I’m attempting to capture the feel of some of the North Liverpool yards that once existed.

The layout structure is mainly foamboad construction

It is early days and not much scenic work has been undertaken except for the arches.

The bridge you see spanning the entrance to the yard is a temporary one placed just for the pics and will be replaced with a proper structure soon. The arches supposedly carry some sidings on an Ex LYR line.

The Preston Station Pilot Jinty you see in the pics ended up in Liverpool after helping an an ailing Black 5 on a Preston – Exchange service (It’s reputed to have been doing 65 plus  through Maghull) and never went home again, the staff at Aintree Shed taking a fancy to it!

These days, it rarely gets above 15mph shunting around Southport Road Goods yard except if it’s a Saturday and regular driver on the shunt,  Jack, wants to get off early to  catch the electric service up to Crosby to watch Marine FC play.

Hi sn,

Like the look of this.  Although your scenics are in the early stage of development they do already convey something of what I have seen in pics of steam era Liverpool.

What are the overall dimensions of the layout?

Regards,

Alex.

I have just had another look and it looks to me like you could run this as ANY ERA and it would look right.

You could even put some German Steam with those wonderful red chassis / Diesels on here and get away with it at a show.

Certainly considering buying a diesel or two!

Hi again,

That faded backscene image really does work, drawing the eye away from the gate and into the 'distance'.  I agree with the suggestion that there is an element of timelessness about this layout.  As Hugh says it would also work very well in a 1970s setting, although I would suggest avoiding a scrapyard as it's been done to good effect so many times already; perhaps some general sidings with room for coal and perhaps a specialised trader?

Again, a great layout and looking forward to seeing more.

Regards,

Alex.

Thanks, yes intend to keep it simple.I'm pleased too with that backscene. Quite agree that it could be 1977 as much as 1963.

I've always been fascinated by semi-neglected end of life yards like this.Wish I'd had the sense to seek them out in my late teens but too busy drinking beer and chasing unsuitable women!

Hi,

regarding sealing the ink: I only can tell you that I ran into problems with HP inks plus various (!) matte sprays. The surfaces get a distinctive reddish hue.

A thing I never observed with other products I used prior to HP.

I would recommend you leave the arches uncoated for the time being; in my opinion sealing isn't sooo important.

Turning to something more serene: you've got a really fine layout – even in its present WiP-form it is very appealing. I like it very much and even would say it's nearly finished.

Keep up the fine work!

Armin
