Julia
I am wondering if anyone could help me identify what type these two brake vans are, spotted somewhere in the vicinity of Canterbury: and Thanks Julia
Fat Controller
Looks as though it's on the old Whitstable- Canterbury West line. The first one appears to be a road van of some sort; not sure of exact origins. The second is the lighter (15 ton) version of the standard SR-built brake. This is available from Cambrian:- http://www.cambrianmodels.co.uk/srwagons.html#sr15tonbv
jwealleans
One version of the road van is available in resin from Smallbrook Studios.

chris25
Hello, Just to let you know two of the 15 ton brake vans were reduced in hieght (11' 7/8 to roof vent) for clearance of the Tiler hill tunnel. Reference to 'An illustrated History of Southern Wagons Volume Four- page 98. These did not last very long on the Canterbury & Whitstable line, later being replaced by cut down LSWR Road Vans. Hope this helps. Chris White
bécasse
The van in the first photo is one of the three ex-LSWR 15 ton Road Vans to SR diagram 1541 which were altered in March 1928 for use on the (ex-SER) Canterbury West-Whistable Harbour branch which had a very restricted loading gauge. The LSWR had fitted several of these vans with vacuum brake equipment for use on Southampton Docks fast goods trains and it is possible that the three conversions were made from this group, if not they were so fitted as part of the alterations as some trains ran "mixed" on the branch until it was closed for passenger traffic in 1930. Two of the vans (SR 54941 and 54944) lasted until 1948, the other (SR 54940) was withdrawn in June 1942. As altered, they were accorded SR diagram 1550. The van in the second photo is one of the two SR 15 ton Brake Vans to SR diagram 1581 which were altered in May/July 1948 to replace the ex-LSWR vans on the Canterbury-Whistable branch. As can be seen, the photo depicts S55713, the other was S55675. As altered, they were accorded SR diagram 1583. I don't have withdrawal dates but they were probably little used after the line finally closed in March 1953.
