Does anyone know if Evening Star was first painted black and then redone in green by Swindon? Speaking to one of my friends who is an old loco driver and he tells me that it was finished in black but then repainted in green when they realised it was the last one....is he pulling my leg ???

Well, since BR had already run a competition to decide the engine's name before she was completed and, I believe, had a naming ceremony as she was leaving Swindon, I'm inclined to be sceptical!

I believe it's always been green.

I've read somewhere that the crew sent from Old Oak Common (I think) to collect the engine from Swindon thought it was a Brittania until they saw the wheels, so it must have been in green from the start

My late uncle was in the building gang and they had painted/chalked, in large letters, 'the last one' from early stages in construction. The frames have no sharp edges due my uncle being ordered to file and soften the edges as punishment for being cheaky to a foreman. Although b/w, the few pictures he took at the time show it was green.
