RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted December 22, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted December 22, 2013 Spured on by some comments by another member in the 00 ready to lay track topic I got out 3 Type 3 bodies which had been ear marked to be converted to English Electric Type 4s on Mainline Peak chassis that are also in the Junk Box. I have another one already in the process and is quite advanced. The first thing that needs to be done to the bodies is make them longer by 33mm. I also wanted to retain the moulded radiator fan grille. I must be one of the few "Modern Image" modellers who are not keen on etched grilles. The radiator on a 40 is further back than on a 37, so to obtain this on two of the bodies a cab was removed. Then from two two bodies (one with cab already removed) a cab was cut off with 17mm of body behind it. From the body that still had its cab next to the radiator this was cut off 79mm from the front of the nose. The body with no cabs had a cab+17mm added to it at the radiator end and the cab and long section added to the other end. The second loco was cut mid way and 16mm off body from the "spare cabless" body was slotted in. The other cab+17mm was fitted the other end. Body 2 with the 16mm insert and the cab+16mm. Body 2 inside showing the "U" shaped plastic card joiners. Body 1 showing the differing parts used in this conversion. I used 1 green body and two blue, so I hope that helps indentify where the parts came from. This loco has had most the detail removed. I have removed the detail from the nose, it will become a disc headcode version. This loco was started some time ago and has had filler added and smoothed. Note the plastic card strip along the bottom of the body, this was used to take away the tumbleholm. This shows the extension done to the Mainline Peak chassis. Two more to do now. RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted December 27, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 27, 2013 Update, the two "new" ones have had the strip of plastic added and filed smooth. They are now on the workbench covered in filler and awaiting my files. I had filled one side of this one with left over filler from another project the other night. The plastic card skirt filled down to remove the tumbleholm.
'CHARD
Clive! You filled in one of the main rad grilles that you like to keep! What happened - was it too much Christmas cheer?
RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted December 27, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 27, 2013 Clive! You filled in one of the main rad grilles that you like to keep! What happened - was it too much Christmas cheer? Hi Chard The 37 frost grille is not as deep as the 40s so it will need replacing with a scribed thin plastic card one. 'CHARD
Ah, I see now. Thought I had misunderstood the thread! Well I had, I suppose!
RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted December 27, 2013 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted December 27, 2013 The other project, a LMR BRCW dmu. I have been experimenting with class 40 style cant rail grilles. In the past I have scribed these on and have not been over pleased with the outcome. Thses are built up from 10 thou layers of plactic card. The even numbered layers are set back 0.5mm. I think it will work.
