pH Posted January 5, 2014 Share Posted January 5, 2014 You know, before I saw that, the idea of different radii on different levels of a spiral had never crossed my mind! It means that the separation between levels doesn't have to be the full height of a train, so lower gradients in a spiral, easier access to track in the event of a derailment, possibly tighter curves (comments on that video say 15 inches in the centre of the spiral) etc. Very interesting! I built a figure of eight on a 4'x2' to test modified Athearn 57' Reefers on, as the then layout had curves as tight as 12" on. But if you build a conventional helix you will use less track, have wider curves, and you won't have a steep, tight curve as the last portion. I see no up side to a spiral unless you want a very long train to completely disappear off-scene before it reappears on the other level. Koos Koos - a googly turned up this from the old Atlas Forum According to the ncespee.railfan.net roster they have LLPX #171 (ex NWP #171, ne AN #173) on lease - which is a SW1500 (not a MP15)... so if that unit does get painted into CFNR paint, then it is a possibility for that other manufacturer to do on their new RTR SW1500... - Curt Mc quote: Originally posted by exiledtotexas IIRC, Cal Northern has a loaned or recently acquired MP15 that Atlas could do (not sure if its in the green and creme though). It just would have needed some detailing and weathering and a preiser stag to donate the antlers :-) none for sale on E-bay at the moment though.... Although not visible in the picture, the locoshop is nearby and the palm tree is behind it, I need to find a decent model of this particular type of palm tree to plant on the layout, not just any palm tree.
