The spiral with Ho Scale 241cars 9 engines

Recommended Posts

:O :o :O

Someone has...

- far too many grey hoppers...

- far too much track...

- far too much time on their hands... :D :D :D

Actually it's almost a shame the last wagon & first loco weren't linked up to make it one continuous train as well... :)

You know, before I saw that, the idea of different radii on different levels of a spiral had never crossed my mind! It means that the separation between levels doesn't have to be the full height of a train, so lower gradients in a spiral, easier access to track in the event of a derailment, possibly tighter curves (comments on that video say 15 inches in the centre of the spiral) etc. Very interesting!

You still need clearance to get the inner track out over/under all the others, so it needs full train height in a single loop to work.

Well, yes, but ... one loop instead of every loop is definitely better if a train is longer than one loop of the spiral.

I built a figure of eight on a 4'x2' to test modified Athearn 57' Reefers on, as the then layout had curves as tight as 12" on. It was fun running a train on it that only just cleared it's rear end on the diamond.

But if you build a conventional helix you will use less track, have wider curves, and you won't have a steep, tight curve as the last portion.

I see no up side to a spiral unless you want a very long train to completely disappear off-scene before it reappears on the other level.

Dear 298,

I see your "near miss" diamond, and raise you...

I've been looking for a model of the lead locomotive, . Was it ever produced as a model? The reason I want it is because it is/was in service with the CFNR, It is actually LLPX 171 (see http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=643285

).What is fun about the loco in the video is that it is running with the deer antlers, that was mounted for a long time on top of the headlight. This picture above doen't show it, and I'm not sure if it is still fitted, but this picture shows it from the rear. http://www.withmy2hands.org/graybeards/cfnr/wvalleyn/corning1.jpg

According to another pictures site: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=194570&showexif=1

It was once on the Apalachicola Northern.  Does anyone know if it was produced as a model, or if decals are available to model my own?

Thanks! Koos

Koos - a googly turned up this from the old Atlas Forum

According to the ncespee.railfan.net roster they have LLPX #171 (ex NWP #171, ne AN #173) on lease - which is a SW1500 (not a MP15)... so if that unit does get painted into CFNR paint, then it is a possibility for that other manufacturer to do on their new RTR SW1500...

IIRC, Cal Northern has a loaned or recently acquired MP15 that Atlas could do (not sure if its in the green and creme though).

My guess from that, and the fact that the layout was at the Bay Area Prototype Modellers Meet 2010, would suggest that you will need to find a sw1500 loco and then do a repaint/detail job. Unless you can find somebody, like Highball Graphics to do the decals (which may be pricey), those will probably be a "patch together" job. The antlers should be relatively easy from twisted, stranded wire and solder, and a bit of milliput forming the attachment plates/skull-top at the bottom. Putting Antlers into google and going to images will turn up loads of patterns/styles/types

Sorry not to be more help

I have found the source for the model, however it's sold out.... Athearn made it back in 2008/009 in it's RTR range. It just would have needed some detailing and weathering and a preiser stag to donate the antlers :-)

none for sale on E-bay at the moment though....  Any of these will do :-)  If you find one for sale PM me ;-)

Are you going to model it with the palm tree growing out of the stack too...?

No, but I am searching for a good palm tree to plant. Although not visible in the picture, the locoshop is nearby and the palm tree is behind it, I need to find a decent model of this particular type of palm tree to plant on the layout, not just any palm tree.

The real thing:  http://binged.it/1ib1lfE

and on my layout, the palm tree needs to be placed behind the locoshop building in this view: 11754833675_2f8ed1a397_c.jpg

Koos - top Palm Trees are Hart of the South - not cheap! Also http://www.themodeltreeshop.co.uk/palm-trees.html , JTT, Preiser, Woodland Scenics, Ebay for cheapies

That's okay, I only need the one iconic one to look good, and is worth a little more to me.  Other trees will mostly be a mix of evergreens and california oak trees and tall wavy grasses to capture the look of the area.
