daveymills
I've been collecting Bachmann's latest ICI TTB methanol tanks to form a complete train. I picked up cheaply these older TTA tanks from the BRM show at Alexandra Palace last weekend from Hereford Model Centre One of HMC's staff was aghast that I might even try to haggle on the price of one of the older 2nd hand Heljan Class 33 models. "It's mint" he said rather pompously and then did not appreciate at all me telling him that actually it was missing several detail spare parts, before walking off. I didnt get it :-( Anyway these were at a decent price. Before and after pictures below. Including the time to mask them and the post-weathering varnish application time but excluding the varnish drying time, it took me < 15 mins per wagon. RMweb Premium Mallard60022 Posted April 4, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 4, 2014 Neat work in that it is 'subtle' and gives the stock a working 'look'. P

gooey_lewy
Great job all-around! For the wash do you just mix paint and thinners and brush on? Cheers
daveymills
Great job all-around! For the wash do you just mix paint and thinners and brush on? Cheers yes acrylic thinner and black paint - in about a ratio of 95:5. it works better on surfaces with lots of grilles and grooves - the finish is more realistic. Using a wash on large flat shiny surfaces is a little tricker. once acrylic paint dries though i find it very hard to 'fix' with extra thinner if it does not look too good. the wash leaves enough colour to make it look workstained/grubby without going over the top. less is more as they say. thanks all for the positive encouragement - much appreciated. RMweb Premium richierich Posted April 26, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted April 26, 2014 latest attempts - Bachmann's 47190 and Hornby's 56040 As a matter of interest, I guess 47 190 was the non weathered DCC sound version used as a base?
daveymills
As a matter of interest, I guess 47 190 was the non weathered DCC sound version used as a base? indeed it was, the factory weathered version is awful - no way was i going to attack that ! some before, during and after pics attached

daveymills
Some wagons arrived in the post this week. Started off with a Tiger Leasing POA. No washed on this one - mix of enamel paint sprayed on and then various areas rubbed off with IPA
daveymills
a rake of TTAs next, before and after photos below. not 100% convinced by the oil stains...too much, too little ?
RMweb Premium richierich Posted May 1, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 1, 2014 The third TTA looks pretty good. Maybe on the others, they need a hint of spillage around the filler.? Guess it depends how long ago the TTAs where cleaned, or released from the paint shop, to the effect you want to create?
daveymills
I did these 4 looking roughly the same. i have further TTAs that I will do looking far worse for wear, with oil spills etc. watch this space....
daveymills
this time a rack of limpets in dutch livery. I sprayed a dirty enamel mix on, then rubbed most of it off. i added a matt varnish and finished it off with weathering powders to represent grime/rust

daveymills
More limpets...elected to make these grubby and a subtlety rusty. will add loads - would these have carried clean or dirty used ballast ?? ran out of Railmatch frame dirt and i can no longer get the stuff shipped over here due to changes in postal regs so have had to make my own colour mix. It is just 5 parts brown + 1 part black. looks ok to me
Eric & Gripper
Nice and subtle. Mixing paint certainly adds variation in tone .Lovely work you had me at page 1. Best regards and keep up the excellent work Eric & Gripper.

daveymills
Bachmann's Olive Sealion, these were factory weathered. very hard to make brown/black/dark rust weathering stand out on a dark surface. Looks good if you go right close, otherwise camera does not pick out the wathering detail so well....
daveymills
These ones were bought already 'weathered', the colour was not bad but they looked like a child had painted them. I removed the paint with isopropyl alcohol which gave the white-ish stain on some wagons. grime and rust acrylic washes were added on top

RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted May 20, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted May 20, 2014 Great work as always, it can be frustrating sometimes taking photos an they just don't do the work justice, think you've managed on these though mate, they look spot on.
