Advice on photography around Bristol Parkway

I'm going to be working around Bristol Parkway soon, sadly  I'm only likely to get an hour, maybe two at a push in the evening for photography (but several of them), and if I feel energetic a bit in the morning before work.

Anybody local, or with local knowledge, recommend anywhere to go photographing (trains obviously) ? - I can find out the train service from my on-line gen sites so don't worry about traffic but I'd prefer HSTs, local units and some freight.

Last time I was in the area (several years back) I went to a small bridge just outside Parkway - to the right of the station on this link

I can't tell if this is still accessible and if so, what the current view is like. I notice there is a smaller bridge further to the right, at the end of Curtis Lane - is this accessible and are the shots any good from it ?

I haven't got a lot of time between finishing work and darkness so I don't want to travel too far from Parkway / Filton / Pilning area - I'm working at Aztec West

cheers.

A quick search on Flickr  for 'Bristol.Parkway 2014' or 'Bristol.Parkway 2013' finds some good shots from the bridge by Martin Harrison,

I have not been here myself since the 1980s though,

cheers

Why not try the end of the platforms.?

I might well do but I've got a few days so wanted to try something different as well.

Interestingly one of the photos shows someone walking over the other bridge, I'll have some small steps with me so I might try both bridges.

thanks both.

If you head south from Aztec West along the A38, you might be able to get some interesting shots where the road crosses the "split level" stretch of railway just east of the Patchway tunnel mouths. At that time of day there would probably be a lot of shadow, though.

Pop down to Filton Abbey wood station about 3 mins ride from parkway. The footbridge has good shots of trains from parkway.

My hotel is not too far from there ...  :)

My old haunt...

Bristol Parkway - TBH not many areas where you can get a decent shot unless you are stood at the ends of the platforms.  You can try the bridge to the East of the station off Hambrook Lane with half decent shot over the Station Approaches...

I strongly advise you keeping well away from Curtis Lane.  It offers better views however you will be soon be greeted by the owner of the house at the end of the lane...assuming he's not "somewhere" else these days.

You will see more at Filton Abbey Wood, however the views aren't great as you are located on a curve and there is a lot of platform paraphernalia to negotiate to get a decent shot.

The Footbridge provides a half decent vantage point...

My advice is head to Pilning.  Take a warm coat (it has its own microclimate!) and get out of the North Bristol Fringe (terrible in rush hour).

Pilning has excellent views both directions and can get some cracking heat haze on the climb out of the tunnel...

Have fun and post up some pics!
