travelintrev
I guess this is the right place for this? (Well it is North American, even though it's Narrow gauge) Some months ago I started on building stock for a "Portage" railroad.. This one though is going to be a bit different as its to be 18" gauge .( or may be 20"! the proprietor can't quite make up his mind! ). All my stuff that I build here has to be in kit -form so that I will fit flat(ish) pack style in my lap-top & carry on bags. Starting with the trolley car , I found a picture on the 'net of a small horse drawn car, that seemed to meet the needs of the Portage railroad.... To give some idea of the size it's next to one of my Mack trucks. If you'd like to see more photos...let me know. (theres a steam dummy to follow!) Trev. dave_long
I'd like to see more, you say 18 or 20" gauge, presuming its O scale?
travelintrev
Thanks for the interest Dave, this stuff is 1:24 scale. (aka "Big") Currently the trolley is on 16.5mm gauge wheel-sets. The photo below has a rule shown to give an idea of size. There are lots of photos of the construction process if any one is interested. Trev. trisonic
Some of our members could ride in that...(yes, I meant “members” as in members of RMWeb). Funnily enough I was waiting for you to post photos in this section, Trev. Best, Pete.
Ozexpatriate
If you'd like to see more photos...let me know. (theres a steam dummy to follow!) Trev, I look forward to pictures of the steam dummy. Presuming that your portage goes around a waterfall, it would be fun to see the portage railway 'upgrade' to electric power when a small power station is built at the waterfall at the turn of the 20th century! RMweb Premium Dava Posted May 5, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 5, 2014 Looks like the Huntsville & Lake of Bays Railway at the real Portage could be an influence here, maybe a tiny Porter Saddleback needed? Dava
travelintrev
Yes the H & L-o-B was a sort of inspiration. Now on a short visit to the UK, the trolley has made it safely back (flat packed) in my carry-on. Posed here with a couple of O/H narrow gauge locos. (ones an 18" prototype from SA) the other a nominal 2 foot gauge Welsh Slate quarry loco.
travelintrev
Back "Home" ! with the trolley & some other stock now waiting for me near Vancouver, (Posted in the UK on Saturday, arrived on Wednesday!) So having restocked my supply of Evergreen styrene it was time to make a start on the "Dummies" interior. First made a frame of the tank ends and firebox, then wrapped them with .020" sheet with the rivets impressed from the rear using a cheap compass point. While that lot is curing I've started on the fire box back head. Which should end up looking like the last photo. Just have to see if i can find my stock of pins. Trev. 5050
I'll agree with the 'different' - but it all looks very nice!
travelintrev
Now with the roof almost complete ( just a bit of tidying up to do) and the boiler / tank / firebox starting to look like it should. Well apart from the smoke stack (chimney) which my efforts of rolling from .020" sheet were not very successful. So now a search for something of a suitable diameter is on! RMweb Premium Dava Posted June 9, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted June 9, 2014 I did say you needed a tiny Saddleback, having this inside a steam dummy is even better! Where is the original in your photo? Dava
travelintrev
The loco is a 30'' gauge Baldwin in New Glasgow industrial museum, https://museumofindustry.novascotia.ca I will try and find a couple more photos, later in the week. Trev
