Daniel43163
Evening all, i have been planning on building a light weight exhibition layout for some time now and ive been putting it off for far too long! Its time to make a start. Ive done a basic mock up of the track plan. This will now be drawn up in Templot over the next couple of weeks to allow the points to be made up at the right angles. I am now awaiting some laser cut MDF to build up the base boards. Once this has been done i can print out the templot design and stick it down onto the baseboard to allow me to work out how it will look. Once this has been done the track can start to be constructed. i have gone for Finescale flat Bottom rail and C&L components. Below is an image of the trackplan in anyrail. As you can see the layout will be made up of 3 scenic modules and then 2 fiddle yard modules. That's all for now until the base boards arrive and then i can post photos of the construction. Comments and suggestions welcome
Daniel43163
Hi all, after much though I have been back to the drawing board and come up with this final design. I find this allows a lot of movements to be made during exhibitions. What are your thoughts and comments?

hybridangel77
the last plan looks very good. in fact im about to build my large TMD and are stumped on a track plan so im going to take some ideas from your plans.
cromptonnut
One of the big problems with TMD's is people tend to cram track into every square inch they can get, with so many points for so many improbable movements there's actually little space to store any stock. However, your plan seems "functional" without falling for any of the usual pitfalls. You don't mention what size the overall plan is going to be? Daniel43163
Thanks for the positive comments, The overall size excluding fiddle yard is going to be 1 1/2 FT by 8Ft. The fiddle yard will be 1 1/2FT by 2Ft..
cromptonnut
Nice space - what "era" modern are you planning to cover? I quite fancy something like that but would probably make it from two 4ft x 2ft boards and add a couple of sidings at the back for some DMU's or carriage rakes but that would leave the fuel point in the way a bit ... but I have two layouts on the go already and can't fit in a third! Daniel43163
Afternoon all, The era will be 1990's to 2014. Today i have printed out the first templates and stuck them to card the size of the baseboards to make sure everything looks alright before its built up in templot. This has given me a chance to see how the buildings will look and fit into the track design. I have place some of my stock to see how it looks. Couple of issues had come about regarding track space, below shows the oil loading siding has turned out to be abit too close to the main running line, this will be easy to solve as only have to slightly adjust the curve. Below is the shed road and stable point, this is the other issue.. as you can see the track hasn't allowed enough space to fit the shed building in and it would be very tight. I will have to think of a way round this.. maybe remodel the track.. Below are some shots of stock on the plan.. That's all for now, Next is to sort the two issues out listed above and then to build up the base boards once they arrive... Kind Regards..
bobster
Like the plan. and some very nice stock you have there - Look forward to following this. Cheers, Bob.
Thumper
Like the weathering jobs on the 31 and 60. The 08s look a bit out of place in their pristine condition next to those two. Nice work.

RMweb Premium JDW Posted May 31, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 31, 2014 It looks very good, the stock and the layout. In relation to your shed issue, I would think about moving it onto the other of the two roads (ie where the 60 is standing in your 4th picture) - mainly to avoid having locos - and tank wagons - having to enter or pass through the shed to get to the fuel point, but also because a) it looks as if it would allow you to have a slightly longer shed and b) I think (assuming that that is the back of the layout) that it would look better if it weren't right at the back, and also would give somewhere for a loco to be lurking, just a nose sticking out, which would be quite a nice little scene. Daniel43163
Afternoon all, Thanks for the advice.. after some more time at the drawing board Ive finally made the plan.. Ive moved the shed to where the fuel point was.. and the fuel point will go on one of the roads where the shed was.. Below is the plan.. i will now draw it up in templot and go from there.. the baseboards are due to me on the 17th June.. so they will be built up and the templot template laid down.. then the track can start to be constructed.. Comments welcome.. Kind Regards
RMweb Premium Clive Mortimore Posted May 31, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted May 31, 2014 Hi Daniel I like the idea. I hope you don't mind but I have put some of my thoughts to your track plan. The sidings at the top would be ideal for a fuel point, where locos can be serviced both sides. I have altered the lower arragement so to give a better run round for the fuel tank wagon trains. I do not like seeing tank wagons being propelled on shed or off, most sheds have a run round. I know Ipswich and Burton did/don't have but in the adjacent stations they do. Please have a look at the track plans for Pig Lane http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/62823-pig-lane-or-should-it-be-i-am-sorry/?p=848740 and Hanging Hill http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/61979-hanging-hill/?p=1468533 Whoops forgot to add the plan
LongRail
Daniel, You may need to check shed width, need internal working clearance either side plus structure then you will need to allow for clearance to adjacent suding

Daniel43163
Does anybody have the shed dimensions for the Bachmann single road service shed? Kind Regards
cromptonnut
Hattons show 44-173 Brick Servicing Depot (320 x 82 x 121mm) but I'm not clear if that's the one you're looking for. All Hattons listings for Bachmann buildings have dimensions. http://www.hattons.co.uk/products/category-Bachmann-scenecraft-oo-buildings-and-trackside-accessories
Daniel43163
Cheers mate, I've drawn out the new layout again in any rail.. I will be doing some experiments during the week on track types.. Kind Regards
Daniel43163
Afternoon all, so today I’ve been doing some track experiments. I’ve opted not to use C&L point work as its too time consuming to construct (Unless anybody is will to be paid to do this for me?) and also I wouldn’t have the knowledge or skill to do a double slip and 3 way. So today I wanted to see what it would look like to have C&L flexi track and peco code 75 points.. I’m not sure if it looks okay…Maybe it would look better after weathering has taken place? Light dusting of sleeper grime and oil around the point blades. What do you guys think? I’m tempted to order a set of Marcway points to see how they would look with the C&L Flexi Track.. Anybody ever used them? Or any of their kits.. How easy are they to build up? I just dont think it looks right, but please do share your Opinions, and if anybody knows anybody that could construct the points at a reasonable price please do let me know!, Kind Regards Daniel
class"66"
Realy taking shape Daniel nice update my mate..
antsimkins
At the end of the day it's your layout and it's whatever works for you, your ability and budget are bound to limit what you choose. I do think though, that in using the code 75 point with the C&L flexi, you can really tell there's a difference in sleeper length and the distance between them. Maybe after a bit of weathering it won't be as obvious and will blend right in. I hope my comments are constructive, I'm no expert of the subject - I've not even thought about starting a layout due to my circumstances, and I'm in awe of what you have got planned!
