But is it? Considering Bachmann had them at £179 with the specialist chip for free, £130-something means they're only loosing the retailer's markup.

Are they? Back in the day when Hornby 90s were 2 for £30 and Shawplan had the paint and transfers it didn't take me long to complete the set. There wasn't a question that I could only have one or two. The Belgian one was my favourite livery but certainly rarer on passenger and sleeper workings, certainly compared to 90029.

90136 would be a good choice because of its use with Anglia and prior to it's repaint into Red it was one of the longest lived liveries still in use, albeit with a few minor variations.

In all my years watching, I never saw more than 1 in a day. Never saw the 4 together (don’t forget the British one). So to have all four on your layout at the same time … SNCB was my favourite as it stood out. DB next. The sybic one was a little dull and the BR one never looked right (because it was different to the rest).

Well, they have gone from having what I presume is a very large markup (over RRP, no retailer to take a cut) to having a price that is way below RRP of the original release and then also bringing in a cut for the retailer? Look at the 9F. Was £170 at the BCC, now £113 at TMC. So Bachmann have gone from wanting £170 for it to selling it to TMC for less than £100 as a guess.

There was at least six occasions when the 3 or 4 were reunited, such as Crewe open days or for a trade event at Trafford Park.

Agree … one such occasion being the Crewe Basford Hall open day during 21st August 1994. I just about managed to catch the three of them together …

I remember seeing it regularly on the sleepers in its last few years in Sybic as 90036.

The yellow roof had faded a lot. I could not tell what livery it was. The Railfreight Distribution decals on the side had faded from red to yellow. The red of the sector markings had faded almost completely, then they got covered with an EWS logo.

It was still one of my favourite liveries though.

They didn’t last long at TMC at that price!

I have been thinking about picking up a RES Class 90 as it looks great. I had trouble with the bogies on the initial Class 90 in RFD livery which had to be sent back. Does the new releases suffer from such problems too or have Bachmann fixed this?

Thanks for any help in influencing the opening of my wallet.

Is the pan assembly available as a,spare?  How much are they if anybody knows?

Contact their customer services as I recall they did have some spares taken off returned 90s. If you’re just after a Brecknell Willis pantograph for a different loco, then there’s still a few Heljan ones available from Gaugemaster. Weaken the spring if you have OHLE. https://www.gaugemasterretail.com/magento/Heljan-hn19850013.html

The Bachmann one is the best at the moment, though..

Go for it!

I’ve not had any problems with any of the Class 90’s that I’ve bought and the RES livery does look good on a 90. I understand some loco’s in batch 1 had the bogie retaining screws over tightened and were prone to some damage during transit if bounced about, but subsequent batches haven’t had this issue.

I have had 2 locos from the subsequent batches (including the res one) with no issues with the bogies at all. Also I haven’t read any reports on here or elsewhere regarding bogie issues so I suspect you will be fine.

cheers

I bought several from Bachmann, £15 a go.

i had to call though.

if your not fitting them to a Bachmann 90, you need to trim off the “tail” that goes to the servo in the body.

They do however fit a lot of locos straight out.. Trix 81, Hornby 86/87/90, Heljan 86. They also fit the old (but not new) Hornby 91.

Hi All,

I have the sound fitted class 90 in RES livery & have to say it is absolutely superb.

My loco has been subtly weathered to tone down the bright paintwork.

I would strongly recommend this loco & would suggest to shop around as there as some good deals about from the likes of TMC etc.

Going back to the Freightconnection class 90s, I’ve been trying to find some shots of them from the original exhibition before they got full yellow ends. So far I’ve found just this one from Rail Magazine. The Belgian one looked especially cool to these eyes, so will keep looking.

I did have a clipping from Railway Magazine showing the unveiling at a weed-strewn Crewe Electric, but can't find it at the moment. Considering they didn't leave CE without yellow ends, those photos are rarer a red 90129 with yellow ends before the DB chevron was applied...
