RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted January 18, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 18, 2016 Cheers Keith, it's amazing the difference a month can make, I'm enjoying ELJ more than ever now an I know now any new layout will just have to be an extension to ELJ as I can't give up on this project. As for a book like I said earlier I'd love to do something like that but surely there are far better modellers than me out there who have failed at such things? Thanks again
RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted January 19, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 19, 2016 As a bit of a change from weathering last night I've started on small retaining wall which stands behind where the relay boxes will be. There's not many pics of this out there but found one on this thread about 3/4 the way down the page http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/59548-boys-from-the-blackstuff/. and on here http://rcts.org.uk/features/mysteryphotos/show.htm?location=Liverpool&serial=14&img=G-132-21A I wasn't to sure of the brick size so I've gone for 7mm dressed stone by Slaters, so after counting bricks it's probably as best I can get it. In roughy the position it will be fixed in. If I get any free time tonight I'll tidy up the edges and give it it's first coat of paint. Cheers
Derekstuart
Paul There is nothing to stop you linking two un-related projects together; granted it might look a bit odd at an exhibition, but how much time does any layout spend at one? In your own home having a train blasting across ELJ and into Matlock (or wherever it was, sorry I can't remember) is not a criminal offence. Only you can decide whether to write a book. Such a thing would not be a five minute affair nor make you the new Frederick Forsythe or Dan Brown overnight, but I suspect could still do well as an e-book. RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted January 19, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 19, 2016 Hi Derek, I have to admit one thing I'd never do is link two unrelated layouts, Buxton if I ever do it is now a long way off and to be honest I'm going to be putting all my thoughts and effort into ELJ an that includes maybe an extension in the future in the form of part of a stabling point but that's a far way off. Cheers
Derekstuart
Fair enough, just a thought- certainly they could share fiddle yards though.
RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted January 25, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 25, 2016 Not much to report of late but I've managed a bit of weathering of the small retaining wall using a rusty red, black and green powders. Cheers
Guest bri.s
Looks very nice Paul Think I'll have to start using powders you get a lovely texture with them Brian

RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted January 26, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 26, 2016 I Also added some thin wire to the two relay boxes, thought it looked better than the etched cables that I removed. Cheers
RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted January 28, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 28, 2016 I got asked a while back could I do a video of the track work so far so here it is, apologies for the horrid commentary but the budged just would stretch any further Cheers
Derekstuart
When's it coming out at the cinema? That was very impressive when you were panning along the track at around 1:50 though it was very odd to see that 35ft long craft knife and 200 tonne vice next to the track. RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted January 31, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 31, 2016 Finally got an hour today so going off the only colour photo I have of the relay boxes I've rusted them up as they looked in a pretty poor state in the 1968 photo. I've fitted them into position and added ballast/earth around them. Next up will be to glue the retaining wall into position and add the copping stones to the top, then it'll be the kids of the trunking. Cheers
RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted February 2, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 2, 2016 (edited) During last nights hour I've made a start on the lids for the trunking, first coat is applied so another later than I'll start cutting to size. I've also started adding sleepers up to the end of the board, including copier clad sleepers for the end two, I can then ballast right up to the end then. Jintyman
Lovely little cameo that bit of wall and the relay boxes make. It's all these little details that bring things together to create a comprehensive picture, and you're certainly creating that picture Paul. RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted February 3, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 3, 2016 Thanks Jinty I'm really enjoying modelling at the moment and really enjoying ELJ just wish I had more free time! I am going to have to sort the frame work out though soon, then it'll be finding it a new home as my 'Toy room' is to become the baby's room do think ELJ will be sharing with my lads room on top of his wardrobe, at least that room is bigger so I'll be able to set it up to work on. Thanks again
RMweb Gold PjKing1 Posted February 4, 2016 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted February 4, 2016 Finally managed to fix the retaining wall into place last night and ballasted up to it. I then started cutting the lids for the trunking to size. Then the task of fitting then, half done anther half tomorrow! Cheers
