tonkatoy
Ref 103 222 rated for 280km/h 280 km/h = 175 mph. That's jolly fast. What was their top speed in regular service? Cheers!
APOLLO
A beautiful locomotive, especially in red / cream, something akin to the HS4000 Kestrel. Its the sleek front end with curved windscreens & neat body sides. Compare both above locos with the plug ugly locos of recent years - where has the class & style gone ? I remember seeing them at Cologne (Koln) HBF back in the mid 80's, can't remember if one was at the head of our express down to Munich. Glad to see a few are still running - well done DB Brit15
tonkatoy
They were build for 200kph. And after the upgrades to those parts of the DB network that could handle that speed, they ran it daily. Thanks!
Bill Jamieson
Returning from a trip to Bosnia last week, my booked train between Ulm Hbf and Koeln Hbf on the Friday happened to be IC118, and 103 235 duly took over at Stuttgart Hbf to take the train through to Muenster. On a beautiful autumn afternoon / early evening, it was a most enjoyable run, particularly on the section along the Rhine. Incidentally, IC 118 is a good train for varied haulage - between Lindau and Ulm it is powered by two class 218s. I had rather expected them to work through to Stuttgart (as is the case with IC2012 from Oberstdorf), but they came off at Ulm, presumably to take !C119 south shortly afterwards, and 101 051 coupled up for the Ulm to Stuttgart leg. admiles
Could anyone confirm if the Br103's are still booked to work IC118 & IC119 through Koblenz?
admiles
Thanks DM! I shall pose a question in my rather basic German polished up by my German mother! (She struggles with the technical railway words!)
Horsetan
I think DB keep three (I think 113, 235 & 245, though I'm happy to be corrected) 103's active on the mainline as a preservation thing. They are probably the most famous and popular German electric by some margin. I guess keeping them active on the mainline helps them earn their keep and provides DB with good PR. They still seem to be a very capable loco despite their years. I have a vivid memory as a child of maybe 6 or 7 seeing three or four of them on the blocks at Munich Hbf. They reminded me of a row of aeroplanes with the curved noses and cab windscreens. According to my Mum I was utterly spellbound! Yes, I think the 103s were inspired by passenger aircraft design. They are very much a design classic of the Wirtschaftwunder years.

admiles
Thanks for the information Felix. I did go to Koblenz bu wasn't there at the times EC118/119 pass through. I did consider waiting but glad I didn't now. It's a shame they're not used any more. Just the rail Adventure one left running now?
FelixM
I asked the driver and he told me there are 5 or 6 or so left in service. I cannot comment on that but I am sure Drehscheibe online has the answer, somewhere. The photo incidentally was taken in south east Brandenburg, totally a "backwater" area – not just in railway terms due to a lack of population centres. Any loco being able to pull more than a local service is unlikely to be found there so I really was in luck. The landscape there is beautiful however. metroman
I think that there are two 103's that are still in service, 103 113-7 and 103 245-7 which was the last class 103 built for DB. Stayed on the Rhine last year, and was hoping to see a 103, but no luck. Going back to Germany later this year hoping to see a 103. I have the Roco model of 245-7 DCC/sound. roythebus
I met someone called Dieter on a 103 at Cologne exhibition in 1981 when I was a BR driver. We're still friend today. He misses driving and especially the 103's.
KaprunSLB
There's an 8 January 2016 photo of 103 113 & 245 at the buffer stops in München Hbf. on page 12 of the current March 2016 edition of Eisenbahn Kurier. 103 245 had been scheduled due bring IC2095 from Ulm whilst 113 was brought in to haul CNL419 from Stuttgart. In recent years I've seen 103 245 routinely and regularly rostered on many trains from München, principally to Ulm and Nürnberg but also to Brenner and elsewhere. I've noticed that Friday afternoon is often a good time to see iconic beauty 245 on a scheduled service but maybe that's just coincidence. A great deal of the time it's on shed at München and can often be seen by looking to left just outside the Hbf except by trains heading towards the Ostbahnhof. Hope that helps.
