In the process of putting registration plates on my vehicles. What I need to know is where BR vehicles were registered. Would it be centrally or more local. I was thinking major cities.

Thanks Merfyn.

Period is 1956-1966. Area is N.Somerset (S&D), presumably these would be from Bath or Bristol. As for vehicles, well pretty much everything that Pocketbond and Oxford have done. Jen-tugs, Scarabs, all sorts of vans. Not too worried about fidelity for most vehicles as long as the area code is correct, but with the railway ones I want it pretty much correct.

A fairly straightforward answer is, all vehicles in that area were Western Region from 1950 until the S&D closed.  So London registrations with fleet numbers suffixed 'W'.  Red and cream until 1963 followed by yellow for goods/parcels and green for engineers.

If you would like a list of fleet and registrations, send me a PM.

I have one registration for a Austin Minor van, I believe one of about 20 bought in 1971/2. Yellow of course. All those models by many makers are I believe fictitious. CVY313K was on the Eastern Region.

The Austin badging on Morris Minor vans was introduced to give Austin dealers a small van to sell to their customers when the A35 van was discontinued. Morris vans continued to be sold by Morris dealers.

Ian, The Southern Region continued to register in London until the end, as your two examples. (Added to my database, thanks)

The LMR registered in Hertfordshire until c1972 when they went to Derby, although with the closure of the Derby LVLO this then was done by Nottingham LVLO to the end.

The Eastern registered in London until combining with the North Eastern in 1968, when they went over to York as the NER had done. When York LVLO closed transferred to Leeds LVLO.

Scottish chose Glasgow to register.

Many variations happened in later days, including large batches of dealer registrations, particularly with cars and Astra vans etc (c1989/90)

  • 1 year later...

Just stumbled on this Merf. Birmingham S&T office had a beige Escort estate URC 358S. The yellow S&T HA vans in and around New Street were XCH 711M through to 715M at least.
