micknich2003
I have been sked to build several signals for a c1937 4mm model of Middleton in Teesdale ex North Eastern Rly. Unfourtantly, the people concerned don't have photographs of the actual signals, and being Central Division, nither do I. I have based this one on an example that survived at Eaglescliff until the early '60's. The model follows my usual practice, filed main post and dolls, decking boards cut from 1mm thick strip etc, the arms etc are etched.
micknich2003
Dear Paul, you come from that part of the world, do you please have any photo's of Central Division signals? Many Thanks, Mick.
RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted September 29, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted September 29, 2014 Dear Paul, you come from that part of the world, do you please have any photo's of Central Division signals? Many Thanks, Mick. Only what I can spot in books, there's so many variations it gets confusing! What spectacles have you used? I used some Stevens ones from MSE on Felton Lane's signals but had to modify them at the top.
micknich2003
Paul, thanks for your reply. I have since been told there are many design differences. Aparantly, "Middleton in Teesdale" was written up in the Railway Modeller years ago, as the "Layout of the Month", I will have the magazine, but I don't have a clue which issuie. The spectacle plates and arms are Highland Rly, and from Mark Tatlow.

Paul Cram
There are pictures of some signals at Middleton in Teesdale in Ken Hoole's book on NER Branch line termini. Some not that clear.
Steve Taylor
Is this to be the bracket at the end of the platform, latterly with one doll missing? There was something similar at Barnard Castle iirc. I'll have a rake through after work tomorrow.
RMweb Gold stovepipe Posted October 7, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 7, 2014 Signals don't appear in photos of Middleton-in-Teesdale very much, this any good? Train 214 by bestshotbruce, on Flickr
micknich2003
Stovepipe, many thanks for your help and interest, much appreciated. Mick.
RMweb Gold stovepipe Posted October 7, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted October 7, 2014 No problem, I've long been interested in the railways of this area. Try the September 1984 issue of RM.
micknich2003
Stovepipe, I will probably have the September 1984 Railway Modeller, I will look it up. Thanks, Mick.
Steve Taylor
Mick, still hunting. I know I've something somewhere. Ken Hoole's "Branch Line Termini" doesn't have anything. I know the east end of Barnard Castle had one on the goods lines so check your yahoo email for the evidence. Regards Steve
Steve Taylor
Mick, further to the pic I emailed you, have a look at p59 of NER Record Vol.1. Also Barnard Castle East, this one is a lot clearer. Steve
micknich2003
Steve, many thanks, I will look it up. I have been busy with several otherthings, and I intend to get back to the signals this coming Monday.
Steve Taylor
No probs Mick. They're coming out of the woodwork http://cumbrianrailways.zenfolio.com/p349676717/h18A1A620#h1630e78 http://cumbrianrailways.zenfolio.com/p349676717/h18A1A620#he705251 http://cumbrianrailways.zenfolio.com/p349676717/h18A1A620#ha258457
RMweb Premium Loxborough Posted November 9, 2014 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 9, 2014 No probs Mick. RMweb Gold Worsdell forever Posted November 24, 2014 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 24, 2014 First and third images please me enormously, because the left hand (seen from the front) signal is on, but not absolutely horizontal... makes my less than perfect alignments protoypical!! George I believe caused by the signal arm shaft/bush being worn and the weight of the spectacle causing the arm to point up by pivoting on the operating rod. Steve Taylor
Also look at early images of Heighington. CD bracket signals protected both sides of the level crossing.
micknich2003
At last the signal is now as near as finished, a bit of paint touch up and final weathering should see it right.
micknich2003
I'm now back on with the Midleton in Teesdale signals. Attached picture of work to date on the Platform Starter, the model is set pre-war, so both dolls will be in use, the left-hand one a miniature arm. The top of the main post is milled both back and front to accomodate the trimmers, likewise the bottom of the dolls.
micknich2003
A bit more progress, both dolls made, lamp brackets fitted, and all riveted to trimers.
micknich2003
A bit more progress, the left-hand arm needs to be connected and the ladder fitted. Normaly I would fit and connect the arms last, but in this case, and being at the front, it (the ladder) would hinder connecting the arms etc. /
micknich2003
At long last and following numerous unplanned diversions, the two Middleton in Teesdale bracket signals are finished. The arms are etches from Mark Tatlow, the ladders etc are ex D&S but altered to suite. The brackets like the posts, dolls and decking are homemade.
