[/url]Going back to the 'scheduled' topic, bearing in mind the number of large goods depots, major stations etc, I'm assuming that BR must have had a reasonable number of fire tenders, similar to the Landie and Scammell examples mentioned so far. Were these fairly standard designs used right across BR, or were there a variety of them on different chassis, regional variations etc?

In my research, very few fire tenders have been found. Apart from the 2 above, all those I have records of are at the Works and one superb Fordson at Holyhead port. Many of the works had Land Rovers in later years. Swindon had this superb pre-war Dennis which replaced their first appliance which is preserved at the NRM. The Dennis was also replaced by a Land Rover.

During the 50s and 60s many railway depots held firefighting competitions in which competitors are often shown in photos using wartime trailer pumps.

The GLA registrations were issued in mid 1941, and was one of a series issued to the NFS.

Thanks Phil.

I had always thought that this was new to the GWR, having the London registration. So that leaves the question, being ex NFS, I wonder when Swindon works acquired it.

IIRC the NFS came into being late 1940/early 1941. It is most likely that it was 'issued' to the GWR by the NFS but operated by GWR staff as and when required. At the end of the war it probably came in to GWR ownership as the NFS was closed down. Another point of interest is that it is a standard machine, most of the GLA registrations were issued to Auxiliary Towing Vehicles which suggests that the vehicle in question was on order for a fire brigade and was taken over by the NFS.

I never worked in one of the really large goods depots but I worked at a number of large passenger stations over the years - albeit post Beeching - and the biggest piece of fire-fighting equipment any of them had was a fire-extinguisher or a wall mounted hosereel. Quite understandable that a more diverse collection of buildings such as a main works would have an internal fire engine especially as they often had stockpiles of timber and shops using a lot of timber (Swindon Works had a 'Fire Station' but it was also the Company/Region's central depot for fire fighting equipment, so possibly a misnomer?).

Thanks Merf- Oxford's forthcoming Coventry Climax trailer pump comes to mind:

In BR use, would these have carried any kind of BR livery, or just be used as they came from wartime service in NFS grey or whatever?

I'm basically trying to get a feel for how some of this firefighting kit might be used in a little cameo scene on a layout...

They would probably have been painted red. GLA 169 would probably be painted red from the very beginning considering its probable history. Only those machines ordered directly by the NFS were painted grey and most other vehicles that they took over retained their original colours. However most NFS vehicles were repainted red soon after the cessation of hostilities.

Always hard to say for certain with B & W photos, but I am almost certain that all B R fire appliances including the trailer pumps were red. The GWR also had some GLA registrations including 139-41 & 200.

Was the ambulance at Eastleigh a Bedford TJ when you remember it ? I have a picture of one new about 1960 there. Like the one in the Oxford to come out list.

The Cardiff Canton shot looks like one of the Dodge G08 long wheelbase recovery units. And behind it a similar dropside truck.

Surprised that BR had no Bedford TJ's after all them O series ,does this mean all them Dublo Dinkys shouldn't be in the yard :)

I have recently been given a lot of information of the LNER & ER/NER/ScR fleet (about 16,000 vehicles)and there is a number of Bedford TJ artics as well as the earlier A series artics and flats. Mainly in the North East.

I've had a look for my old Dublo Dinkys.

I'm with Kev on this one. It looks like B R to me. I think they are Mk 2 Escorts, not the Mk 1 that Corgi did.

Wonderful find though, as pictures of B R vehicles being delivered by rail are like hen's teeth. I have seen the odd shot of one or two in a goods train from red and cream days. This is the first of a complete train and of yellow vans.

I thought they were mk2s, if memory serves me, they were in a lighter shade of yellow as per the ones in the pic.

Black bumpers as well.

I don't know about the vans but the saloon car versions of Mk 1 Escorts supplied to the WR in 1974 were delivered via Ford main dealerships in the West Country. The cars where I was based were replaced in 1978 and a similar process took place with the old cars being taken back to a main dealership and new ones coming from that source. At sometime shortly afterwards being taken to our local vehicle maintainer who carried out a post delivery check (although if any problems occurred they went back to the main dealer who had supplied them). So I would think what the picture shows is a Ford delivery to a a main dealer (who would then carry out all the pre-delivery checks etc) however at that time I've an idea BR vehicles were still being maintained by NCL at St. Austell so they might possibly have been going direct to there on delivery from Ford.

Just checked the original caption. 12 B R vans for unloading at St Austell Motorail terminal in April 1979.

So Mark 2 Escorts that will be registered with London T registrations.

Now somewhere I have a MTK kit of a Carflat !

Merf.

I have some MK1 subs ready for body removal rolleyes.gif

Just looked at the wholesalers and the mk1 BR escorts are a very favourable price!
