New Project …..WBB Minerals PAA Hoppers

To match my increasing GBRf fleet, one of my favourite workings is the Middleton Towers sand train that runs on the ECML most days in the WBB Minerals PAA hoppers.

Big Thanks to Mark Saunders who supplied me with a rake of 30 PGA hoppers suitable for the conversion to PAA's.

The major conversion from a PGA is the hopper hood, this I have made from plasticard as a master then started molding them out of resin.

First prototype is completed, just 29 more to go !.

Normally I like to make my own decals but for this size project I have commissioned them to a specialist…….hurry Steve.

I am busy with my WBB Minerals PAA hopper project but at times finding it hard going doing a rake of 30 wagons, so I find I have to have other little projects on the go to keep my mojo going, I guess most of us are similar, whilst I do try and discipline myself to only have a couple of projects on the go, realistically I always have half a dozen on the go at the same time.

Anyway a project I have just finished, a rake of Tanks, all but two based on the dreaded Hornby TEA, love them or hate them at least they do have a few current liveries in their produced range, even if they are far from the authentic prototype. One thing I did find they are absolutely atrocious runners out the box, I have replaced all the wheels with 12mm disc's and spent a fair amount of time adjusting the tension lock couplings but perseverance pays and now they are running very well.

Here's a few pictures of the livery and weathering.

Murco Blue and White.

Great work on the tanks Richard, sometimes it's great to take a (very) basic model and make it into a much more realistic representation. It gives great saticsfaction too to see a scale length train of wagons that cost relatively little and have had a smattering of modifications...it's what modelling is really about!

Keep up the great work,

Jack.

Just wondering how people manage their DCC loco roster ?, I have been just using a spread sheet and refer to that when I want to run a loco but now my layout is progressing to where I can actually run trains, my chief assistant driver, who happens to be 5 years old, wasn't happy with the spread sheet, so I have come up with a Cardex type system, where we have a physical card with the Loco address printed on and we keep that alongside the designated controller. It seems to be working fine.

I just simply photographed each of my loco's, edited the details onto the image, printed them off and  then laminated them into A6 folders.

They look really smart, Richard.

I use the 'long' (4 digit) DCC address using the first two and last two numbers from the loco number, I.e. The address for 97302 is 9702, so I haven't needed a roster (yet!).

I've seen an example of an A4 sheet with photo and address of about 8 locos which looked quite smart (on Diesels in the Dutchy I think)

Cheers

This is exactly my method, works very well and means you're less likely to need to re-shuffle every time you buy a new loco, e.g. a class 66 and you've already filled your quota of 66s on your list

Not had much time at home recently and what I have has been spent on layout building, I must start a Layout thread.

Managed to make a current loco out of one of my old stock loco's in the form of 37401, minus its air horns I hasten to add. This loco started off what I thought was a simple renumber and decal job, but the prototype has had four livery variations since entering service with DRS in the summer, so ended slightly different then first started.

Next up, keeping with my GBRf theme, 20905, this started off as the Bachmann factory model and then I replaced the disc head codes with some home made resin cast box head codes, added a set of Shawplan extended range fuel tanks and finished off with a NRN aerial, pleased how the loco has come out.

Paired sister loco was straight out of the box with just a NRN aerial attached.

Having grown up seeing 20's on a daily basis, they have always been close to the top of my favourite loco list, so with the recent Bachmann  release of 20118, I thought I had better have another pair of GBRf chartered 20's in the form of 132 and 118, both of which only needed NRN aerials and some cantrail lining, along with 132 having  Barrow Hill Depot nameplates fitted.

Finally my 2 sets of 20's along with Barrier wagons available for Exhibition spot hire should anyone need any "S" stock moving.

When I saw the Heljan O gauge 60, I just had to have one, stunning model, my first venture into O gauge, it could become addictive, I love the detail and finding this project so much easier to work on than OO, having said that there is no room for error that you can sometimes hide on a OO repaint.

Anyway here is my Heljan 60, just finished in the paint shop, waiting on being reassembled, decals applied and an infamous driver  added to the cab.

Hi Marcus,

Funny you should ask about the stripping, it was a Loadhaul liveried machine and nothing would touch the factory finish, I tried Super Strip which normally strips anything and that had no effect, I then tried an overnight soak in Brake fluid and that also didn't touch the finish. In the end I just flatted down all the livery and then primed over the top of it with Halfords grey primer.

Finally got around to finishing my WBB Minerals Sand hoppers, well at least 20 for now. They will not win the most accurate model wagon Trophy of the year but overall they capture the PAA's pretty well.

Out on their first working on Linfit, 66720 heads them from Middleton Towers to Barnby Dunn glass works.

Indeed but they need some subtle weathering. I have the locos but not the wagons! Are they Vitrains 47's?

Andy, yes they are both VItrains, they where straight out the box this evening, just fitted Decoders and gave them a run, they do indeed require weathering, one needs renumbering and all the detail packs fitting to both loco's.
