kirley
Class 80 Set Post #559 showed my build of this Set which came to a quick halt after problems with my paint work not sticking to the brass underlay. Perseverance has eventually paid off and here is the finished model. Power Car No. 67 Intermediate No 738 Driving Trailer No 738 Just waiting on a decoder to run it on my layout.
pat141
That looks beautiful, i like that livery. Is there a slight height issue with the bogie on the middle coach.
kirley
Thanks Pat, the floor of the coach was not pushed fully home, another example of my deteriorating eyesight, it takes a camera to point out the obvious to me nowadays more and more. kirley
Noticed the model was not running smoothly so I put it back to DC and and ran it on the Rolling Road. The motor became quite hot so I dismantled it ran it without any load and it seemed OK. Re-assembled it and put it back on the rolling road. While it runs OK the motor and the body of the model was warm after 30 mins running. I believe it's a skew wound 5 pole motor, donor was a Hornby Class 73 locomotive. Any suggestions please on how to solve this issue? Edited November 25, 2018 by kirley
wiggy1
Motors normally run hot if the meshing is wrong, to tight or axles not free. Wiggy.

kirley
Drop Side Pallet Cement Wagon Got 4 of these great kits from Ian (MIR) at the Bangor Show last April and eventually made a start on them. The pictures follows the process of the build. You have to apply your own couplings. It took me a while working out what these were, the instructions called them 'lock wheels'. They are opening and closing mechanism, changed to wheels on later wagons. After painting and adding decals the last job was fitting the chains, fiddly but worth it. These four will join the two others I already have. Pictures of them running will be on my Kirley Junction thread.
NoelG
Very nice Kieran. Are the chassis resin too or Dapol prestwins?
John M
Hi Kieran. Has Ian McNally re-introduced some of the MIR range of wagon kits? It was a great loss when he discontinued the range several years ago. Do you know if he intends to market them more widely or soley through postal sales and exhibitions? RMweb Gold Robert Shrives Posted December 2, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 2, 2018 (edited) Ian has a ebay presence as well I am sure he would if bits available do a "buy it now" arrangement. Worth an ask as they say. A big thanks for the pictures as I have two sort of started but despite some photos working out all the bits and the chains had caused a pause. - no excuse now ! kirley
Very nice Kieran. Are the chassis resin too or Dapol prestwins? They are MIR kits which include the chassis and Ian uses a smoother resin for the recent run of wagons.
kirley
Hi Kieran. Has Ian McNally re-introduced some of the MIR range of wagon kits? It was a great loss when he discontinued the range several years ago. Do you know if he intends to market them more widely or soley through postal sales and exhibitions? Since Ian retired he does occasional runs of some of the old MIR range. His outlet is through ebay and his sellers name is sylvimcnall-0. You can still contact him on his house phone to buy direct. kirley
Provincial Wagons - UTA Brown Vans + CIE Containers Kits purchased at the Bangor Show last April but only hit the Work Bench now. I got 3 more CIE 20' container kits. Showing Provincial Wagons unique brake assembly, a fiddly job. Painted and decals added.

kirley
4 WHEELED TIMBER WAGONS PROJECT 21/18 Noel alerted me to these wagon tops available from Shapeways and I like the job he did on his. I copied his use of old Triang chassis for these wagons. I added an extra bar on the center bay, replaced the couplings, enlarged the buffers and used metal wheels. A spray of Halfords primer with a little touch up detail added and they are done. Still working on the timber loads.

NoelG
Really Nice job Kieran. Like the little extra details you've added. Two axle models are so versatile in terms of possible train formations and the length of modelling era they can run. Also can look more scale like on typical layout curves (i.e. than longer modern era bogie stock).
kirley
December Projects Just realised I’ve been neglecting my Work Bench post so here is a catch up. UTA Coaches. Picked up three Mainline LMS corridor coaches at Bangor Show last April and the plan was to repaint into UTA livery, two as a representation of an F3 coach and the Brake as an I3. I added the Keen corridor connections and of course metal wheels but did not adapt the body work.
kirley
GNR W1 Brake Van This is one of Richard Ellis-Hobbs 3D productions. He has manufactured the 6 wheel chassis allowing the middle wheels to move. Easy assembly. First coat of primer added. Got its pink undercoat. A coat of mahogany for the carriage sides. Build has ground to a halt, wheels, buffers etc still stuck in the Christmas Post.
kirley
CIE 10T Brake Van While waiting on the parts for my GNRI W1 Van I made a start on the Provincial Wagons Brake Vans. First primer coat added. Two Brake Vans ready to enter service.
kirley
CIE Coach I put a minimum bid on a ebay ‘spares or repair’ for a Ratio kit not thinking I would win it but no one else bid on it so I decided to have a go at repairing it. Originally it was a Midland Clerestory coach and I was wondering if it is close to anything that ran on Irish rails. I was given advice on the scarcity of clerestory coaches in Ireland so I removed the clerestory roof and replaced it with a flat one. The model was in poor condition and there was a good bit of work to get the bogies back in running order (excuse the pun) as well as fabricating new running boards and replacing couplings. I had a bit of luck in covering up the higher up window bits above the normal windows; I found a piece of plasticard channel that just fitted. Body given a coat of primer and guide holes drilled for roof vents. This original Midlands clerestory coach evolved into a ‘battered end of its days’ CIE Coach. Still doing a turn at Clonmel though.
