Glenfinnan - Modular Baseboard Construction

Hi,

Latest updates include the delivery of 2 - 4ft x 350mm straight boards which will be constructed over the next few days. Track has been been weathered with Precision sleeper grime and the rail sides painted with light rust in readiness for ballasting which is always going to be a chore. Although progress has been slow I feel once the ballast has been completed progress on the layout will pick up.

Bill.

CL27 037 approaches Glenfinnan. The track on the left has been given a wash of sleeper grime.

Hi,

Work has started on the first of two signal boxes for Glenfinnan. The first will be painted in that rather garish lime green colour and the second one painted in the present colour. This will allow me to cover two periods from 1970 to the late 1980's.

Shown here are some of the additional component parts used in the construction. Although I have used the plastic Ratio windows for this first box I intend to use these laser cut wooden ones for the second one.

Today I spent some time putting together the additional two straight boards from Tim Horn. The boards fitted really well and it only leaves me to add the alignment dowels and the facia sides to do. I will finish them by painting in grey undercoat and ready them for track laying. It may seem a bit extravagant for a single line of track but will give me more realism as the line curves away from the staion.

Hi Dunmar

Looks like you're making good progress on the new layout. Nice job with the track work and I must say I particularly like the signal box.

Good to see those nice Highland stalwarts making an appearance as well.

Looking forward to seeing more.

Cheers

Marcus.

Hi,

The first phase of ballasting is now well under way. Nothing new in the method I use - a mix of Woodland Scenics - fine brown being the main ingredient with small quantities of light grey, black and a darker brown mixed in. The ballast is sprinked in between the sleepers first and then on to the outsides and after a lot of pushing and shoving with a small brush until I'm happy with the ' fit ' - then it's sprayed with a ' mist ' of clean water. By the way got myself a really good spray bottle from my local Dobbies garden centre - £1.49p that gives a really good ' mist ' and doesn't wash the ballast on to the floor. Then its on with the mix of PVA glue - courtesy of the PoundShop, and with a few drops of washing up liquid applied with a ' pipette ' ( there must be a quicker way ! ) it is then left to dry overnight.

Using the pics I took last year the idea is to capture the look of Glenfinnan so there will be a fair bit of ' dry brushing to be had to get that reddy / pinkish effect of the ballast. The layout will portray the area at the height of a very hot Summer. ( I wish ! )

The track will finally be finished with a fine ' misting ' of track rust / sleeper grime and oily stains applied with the airbrush - but only slightly so as not to lose the overall effect.

The colour typical of the area will be achieved by a lot of ' dry ' brushing using a mix of red/brown's with white added at each application - applied with a fairly large brush.

Hi,

Progress indeed  Iain ! - had just time this evening to join the two main boards together and I must say really pleased with the results so far. You can't really get a sense of the curve - but I'm working on it ! Some more pics with a L/L 37 and the signal cabin. You'd be right in thinking - that's some step up ! or a signalman with really long legs :locomotive: ! The cabin will be placed at a point just where the platform ramp begins just this side of what was a small loading shed.
