S&DR (Somerset & Dorset Preserved Railway), Fictional Preserved & Period Layout

Hi all. Just though I would share with you my Freelance 00 Gauge Layout.

Construction started nearly 10 years ago now, when I much younger (hence the maze of tracks :jester: ), designed really as a layout for running as much stock as possible. Situated around the loft, it's about 25ft by 12ft and features a Mainline, Branchline, Incline Quarry Line (all are ovals) and a Tramline (end to end).

As I have gotten more into my modelling, I have found it's not so much about how much I can run, but what I run and of course scenery. I would love to really start again in the near future, creating a single oval, winding through the Somerset Country Side, with a passing loop, country station and maybe even a colliery. As you can probably guess I'm a big fan of the Somerset & Dorset, with much of my stock reflecting this (the majority being with BR numbers that saw service on the line during in the 50's/60's.

I also love the freedom of the preserved scene too, which gives me the opportunity to run my other locos (including visiting locos from friends layouts) along side my S&D Stock, running under the name of the S&DR (Somerset & Dorset Preserved Railway). I seem to be doing this a lot lately, thanks to me visiting and filming preserved railways and galas. In doing this I started editing the sound from the footage, which I record on these trips and added it to footage my models on the layout. I have been doing this for a couple of months now I feel I have really got the hang of getting the sound line up to the movement of the models just right. It really does give me the sense of achievement, using my real footage again in a different way and seeing people comments on what they think of the end result. Plus it really does bring a whole new feel of realism to the layout! As you can't beat the sound of the real thing! :locomotive:

Anyway have a look and listen for yourselves! :locomotive:  Hears my latest Preserved Themed Gala on the S&DR, 'Best of the West', which Celebrates the 180th Anniversary of the GWR (ironic I know being an S&D fan, but I do like the GWR too :jester: ), which is happening this year.

Hope you enjoy!

A Guard's Eye View of the layout, from the Brake Van on a mixed freight service hauled by 7F 53808 (Period S&D Running). There have been a few changes since I filmed this video, but it give you a good representation of the layout from the view of a Guard.    :jester: Hope you enjoy!

(The YouTube Thumbnail is still not showing, any help to fix this issue :scratchhead: )

Hi Callum,

Been a follower on your youtube channel for a while. Are there any plans on further development of the layout? as I remember you once saying that you didn't want to do much due to the possibility of moving in the not to distant future.

The effort you put into your gala video was worth it, the sound was very convincing with the model trains matching the type and amount of stock in the sound clip.

Thanks you ever so much woodenhead! Glad you enjoyed! I have done a number previous to the GWR Gala, which I'll post on her at a later date, much like the Guard's Eye View video, which is also sound edited. I really do enjoy creating them and it really does bring the models to life. :locomotive:  I plan to do a video in the not to distant future showing how I do it.

A video should be online later today showing just some of my real footage which I get the sounds from. All the sounds I use are my own recordings, which many people find hard to believe. :jester:  More to come :locomotive:

Thanks you ever so much Gary and glad you enjoy the channel :locomotive: Yes, I have been thinking about it a lot lately, and am really tempted to have a fully out go, if the time and money is right, but will have to see. Still the layout at the moment is going well, good for reviews and of course for the sound edits, so guess will be seeing more of it as it is in the near future :jester:

A compilation of some of my favourite model railway sound edits, showing my original footage, where I got the real sound from, followed by the sound edit itself, in which the sound is added to the footage of the model.

I have been asked a number of question on how I create these sound edits, and plan to do a full video showing you how too, in the not to distant future.

In the mean time, sit back, relax and watch (and listen) to the trains pass by. :sungum:

Hope you enjoy! :locomotive:

Have you ever considered creating a website about the 'preserved railway' such as that like the M&CR

Not a website as such, but maybe a facebook page in the near future. I don't do a much running as I would like to at the moment, so do really see much point. But you never know  :locomotive:

The first Steam Gala on the S&DR Last year. My sound editing has come on a bit since then, but still an excellent watch  :jester:

The 8th to 10th August saw the Somerset & Dorset Railway (S&DR) hold their Summer Steam Dreams Gala, featuring engines from the home fleet, plus guests! Over the 3 days the visitors enjoyed both passenger and freight services, behind a varied fleet of engines, including visiting engines 'Kinlet Hall' and the famous 'Tornado'. The gala was a massive success and with all locos performing flawlessly over the 3 days.
Locos in action for the event where...
Home Fleet;
NE O6 (Stanier 8F), 7675
Ex LMS Stanier Black 5, 45455
BR Standard 3MT Tank, 82001
Ex GWR 45xx, 4545
Ex GWR Class 8750, 4666
Visiting Engines;
GWR Hall Class, 4936 'Kinlet Hall'
A1 Trust's Peppercorn A1, 60163 'Tornado'
Hope you enjoy!

Hope you enjoy!  :locomotive:

Here I was thinking you'd started another layout. I'd completely forgotten about this one for some reason. I blame a brain fart (it does smell a bit in here now you mention it) And this was linked at the bottom of Bodgits thread.

I remember when I saw the first video you did of this layout, how many years a go it was now (3?) and being  ever so slightly jealous... Good to see you've started a thread for this now as I don't use youtube any more for various reasons!

LOL! I get those Farts all the time!  :jester: Bodgits thread? Think the layout it a Botched Job! :jester: It is really that long! Will have to check when I started as I tend to do a yearly special. It's nice to see the layouts getting some nice comments on here. Sure I'll be posting more of my video on here soon, maybe even those first ones you just mentioned...  :locomotive:

Another thing that the layout comes in very hand for is reviews, with it being the back drop for nearly every one I have done over the 3 years of my YouTube Channel so far! Hears the latest featuring the all new Bachmann Class E4...

A review of the all new Bachmann Class E4, in smart BR Late Lined Black Livery. Designed by Robert Billinton and introduced in 1897, these small but powerful locomotives where built for local passenger, freight and branch work, with all but one surviving in to British Railways Ownership and the last being withdrawn from service in 1964. One member of the class has been preserved.
This model is one of 4 versions being produced by Bachmann, including the as preserved '473' in beautiful Southern Green and Pre-Grouping '579' in superb LBSC Umber Livery. With a very high level of detail, superb finish and the best running I have ever seen from a model fresh out the box most amazing out the box, the Class E4 is a must for any Southern Region or Preserved Era Modeller! 10/10!

Hope you enjoy!   :locomotive:

Have you gone and bought it again like the Bachmann 64xx or has it gone back to the shop and stayed there? :P

Another running video on the S&DR this time a period one!  :locomotive:

Not only that it is a layout to layout service, with a few YouTube and modeller in Australia :sungum: , who happens to have the same rolling stock! Really give the feel that train really went somewhere! :jester:

April 2nd 1962, saw an interesting goods service over the Somerset and Dorset. Somerset and Dorset 7F, 53808, heads a shorted mixed goods service, bound for Mount Oxfordshire. The rake consisting of a Bogie bolster, 14 Ton Tank, 12 Ton Van and BR 20 Ton Brake Van, made an interesting sight behind the 7F, built for haul more substantial sized train, over the famous Mendip Hills.
Be sure to click the link at the end of the video to see the service arriving at Mount Oxfordshire and of course C.W.Jenkins Rail Films Channel.
Hope you enjoy!

Following my review of the Bachmann Class E4 in stunning LBSC Umber Livery, here's a quick running session featuring her hauling a non-prototypical, but still very smart looking rake, consisting of two Hornby Super Detail LNER Teaks and a Extra Long CCT Van.
Though Non-Prototypical, I felt the beautiful Teak Finish and White Roofs of the LNER Gresley Teaks, made a good match with the stunning LB&SC Umber Livery.
As can be seen she is a superb performer, with smooth and quite running, and having no issues around bends or over point work. An excellent model indeed!

Hope you enjoy!

Looks brilliant with the teaks even though the class would have never run with them. I assume when the Bachmann Birdcage stock is eventually released some will be going your way?

Very nice, nothing like a proper LNER engine!! :D

Thanks Will! Was nice to give her a run again, plus to get the teaks out. As you can see I got a few more to add to the rake, sadly the Buffet coach keep on derailing, so I had leave it out teh rake.  :boast:
