Whenever I used to do 'official' signal box visits, I'd always ask the signalman's permission if I could recline in his comfy chair, before drinking a cup of his tea! As a youngster, back in the late 60s/early 70s, I spent many happy hours in Freshfield 'box. The bobby was a good friend of my grandad. The Up Distant was a fair old pull to get it to clear...
