Hi guys

I though I'd start a workbench on buildings and stuff for my new layout build Cudworth

I'll be doing a layout thread sometime soon aswell

Here's the first project for it it's the main station building

I'll start with the research ,I've looked at books ,pictures and anything else that I can find to so my own drawings for it

Getting the dimensions were though counting bricks and educated guessing plus measuring ,similar buildings that are out there ready to plonk

Here's a few pictures

post-5078-0-37692300-1430745537_thumb.jpg

I basically started with a rough drawing of what was there then with more pictures and info built up as good as I could the detail it took around 4 rounds if drawings to get to the final ones I worked off ,saying that even after I started the build I found inaccuracies so changed them as I go

Here's the nearly final drawings

post-5078-0-77573300-1430745703_thumb.jpg

First I started with a shell out of thick plasticard ,I have used mount board card before but thought I'd try the plasticard as the shell this time

After all the swearing and cutting out the doors and windows I'm happy I used the plasticard instead of the card .

I've found that you can tack the sides together with the Mekpak and of you want to undo the sides just add a little more to the joint to undo it ,obviously you can't do that too many times but it gives you a bit of play compared to gluing up card

After I'd got the shell I started to clad with brick and styrene ,the styrene to simulate the stone bits

It was awkward due to where the stone work is and finishes so instead of being able to clad the whole side in brick I had to add the brick in a piece meal fashion

post-5078-0-56243600-1430746535_thumb.jpg

I cut the brick sheet to the right shape then added it to the side

I cut the windows out after by cutting down the middle of the window opening through the covering brick then scoring the edges of the brick in the window so I can bend it back for the sides of the window aperture , to help me bend the brick sheet I added a slight bit of mek to soften the plastic so it will bend inwards (if that makes sense) sorry no picture of that

I then I added the window frames ,I've made them out of styrene strip ,I've not added glazing I'll add that once it's all done painted and I can add a little glue and slip the glazing into place behind the frames

This way of doing the windows was a first to me ,I wanted to avoid frosting on the glazing so thought I'd try this way

Here's a few pictures of how it is now

There's still plenty to do finish the window and door frames, roof, chimneys ,

And I've to go and get some more styrene strip to finish the stone work on the carpark side

They'll be a lot more buildings to be done ,I've another 3 station buildings for the other platforms ,2 signalboxes .a few bridges , an assortment of PW huts plus a few houses and mabe a gas holder

Thanks

After all the drawings and things I've found that there's a building plan in The midland record issue 5 ,so going to try and get my hands on that,

Hopefully I'm not too far out if it's close I'll be happy and mabe redo the building in the future

Thanks

Well after getting hold of the station plans I've decided that I got the platform side and ends about right and I'm happy with them but the carpark side was quite off so had to rebuild ,I've cut all the windows out and just waiting to get some more brick sheeting to carry on with this side

Also the frames in the of the building I did in my last post were wrong so going to redo them tonight the right style of frames were actually simpler lol

Here's the difference in the sidespost-5078-0-39188100-1430827671_thumb.jpg

Thanks

Tonight's update I've cut the the roof support and put it in place once I've built all the chimneys I'll widen the gaps for them in it

I've just about built a chimney just need the gobo and pots i might use filla or das clay for the gobo not sure which yet only another five to go lol

I've also started to rebuild this end it's much closer to the right dimensions now

Thanks mate ,it's all the same building principles as 00 just fiddler lol

I'll be restocking some things today and hopefully and I'll progress some more

Once I get the printer working again and get some templates sorted I'll start on attempting track and points I may put my atempts on this thread or start the layout one for it not sure yet

Thanks

Thanks Paul and freebs

I thought I'd really test myself with this it's the biggest thing I've done ,and I'm sort of figuring it out as I go along ,plenty of failed attempts in the bin lol

One tip I do have is if you have a cut on your finger don't get mek pak in it ,it stings lol

Here's tonight's progress ,I've added a few doors and nearly finished another chimney

Just wondering freebs what do you use for the gobbo (mortor ) that the chimney pots sit on?

Thanks

Morning Brian more excellent photos, just to put my pennies worth regarding the mortar I've used a very small amount of das clay for mortar around the chimney on my hut, duno if it'll work in 2mm though.

Cheers, Paul

Hi Brian - you're really going to have to stop standing on your head to take those pics ;)

I'll reiterate what Paul said  -DAS clay, or, I find that standard household filler also does the job.

Hi Brian

I think it's to do with the phone rotating the picture. Someone on the MERG forum had posted their profile picture from a phone and on an iPad it was rotated but on a PC it was fine. They had to modify the photo but I'm not sure what they did to prevent it rotating. All your pictures are showing correctly for me on the iPad in this thread.

Cheers

Hi Paul

Thanks ,it's weird on phone or tablet there all fine but on a laptop some have been posted upside down so no idea lol

I find it easier to post photos and videos off my phone so I'll check all my future posts in the laptop if possible in case I get any Rouge pictures

Thanks

So we now get a choice between pictures from down under, or ones the right way up posted twice! I'm glad I've managed to avoid getting one of these annoying phone things, and post on my laptop with a big screen attached, so I can preview and carefully check everything before I post it!!!!!
