Jim76
Hi, does anyone know the prototype origins of this model? Jim
RMweb Gold Oldddudders Posted November 22, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 22, 2015 A quick look through Wikeley & Middleton's book on Southern stations fails to provide a likely candidate. However, the only pic of this model anywhere on the Internet seems to be of Bachmann's own 3-quarter view from platform side, and that book specialises in views from the street, as they were the Regional Architects of the day. I'd say probably not Southern.
Steamport Southport
Looking at the pictures on Hattons website it looks like something from Northern England to me. Possibly Midland, L&Y or LNWR. Especially with the maroon doors and windows. Jason.

Wickham Green
Thanks Jason, A friend suggested possibly Great Northern (?) but also pointed out the regional colours may suggest otherwise. Cheers, Jim ...... and the correct answer from Bachmann today is "Having spoken to our Scenecraft team they have informed me that whilst the Suburban Station (44-0045) is a mostly generic model, they did draw inspiration from the station at Catford Bridge and the model features station architecture commonly seen around the country." - that's on the South Eastern Railway's Mid-Kent Line for the uninitiated - but, while it may "draw inspiration" it's certainly not a model of the complete station which is a LOT bigger. ( In case you were wondering, I'm also told that "The Timber & Stone Signal Box (44-0042) is again a generic item, but draws inspiration from several boxes around the South West and many customers purchased this model to complement the Shillingstone models which were available at the time." ...... the timber section looks like a Stevens & Co 'box to me though I'm not sure about the barge boards - and most, at least, Stevens boxes seem to have been of fully timber construction. [ Absolutely nothing like the 'box that stands at Shillingstone now though I've no idea whether that's original or has been brought in from elsewhere.])
Steamport Southport
Thanks. That clears that up. Looking at Google Images it's definitely based on the entrance to Catford Bridge. Pretty ironic that I missed that as I have all the Middleton Press books for the Southern suburban lines and have even contemplated building a layout based in the area. Maybe I should try looking at the buildings and not just the locos and rolling stock. Jason
