Kirkby Luneside (Original): End of the line....

Ah, now thats the view you need!

If you look closely, the side wall actually projects beyond the "column" towards the bottom of the mouth - although when modelled this may not "look right", so perhaps you could use modeller's licence, and have the toe of the retaining wall end in line with the tunnel mouth edge of the stone column.

Let me know if that doesn't make sense and i'll sketch what I am bumbling about...

Also, I do agree with Michael on the capping stones - esp. now I can see then from this angle.

(Trust me, I'm no engineering genius! But some of this comes from what you can I have talked about before - things "looking right", be it thickness of bridge spans, angles of wall etc... like a lot of what we do, it comes from observing real life buildings and structures and wondering 1/, how they did something and 2/.why they did it the way they did. I explained to my son the other day I could never be an electrcal engineer: if I can't see what is happening, I often struggle to understand it. That makes me a natural as a civil engineer!)

Where does the water go? It certainly makes it down to the formation on the left hand side (through a 90* turn in the wing wall) but the right hand side is a little more difficult to see. Do they just go into culverts heading towards the river bridge seen in the old photos that I linked to about 20 odd pages ago? Thats my guess, as the stream or whatever that is there would probably be the easiest place to get rid of it.

Maybe Jeff you could have a 'gusher' coming out of the side of your drop board by the viaduct? That would look quite impressive!

Andy G

That's a perfectly feasible and brilliant idea - especially as this tunnel mouth is adjacent to the viaduct, with its attendant river. Yes, I'll consider that!

Water in a river isn't too bad to model: a material like Woodland Scenics "Realistic Water" - a gel-like substance - is very good. I've never modelled a mini-waterfall before. So? There's always a first time. I had an aversion to scratchbuilding - didn't know what I was missing until I started this layout.

Ok, I'm off to do some more ply cutting. Thanks again for the info and some great ideas.

Jeff, having just studied your portal photo again, the top parapit wall of the original has quite a curve over the top of the arch, whereas yours is flat. Maybe when you add the stonework you could make the top centre of the parapit wall about 3-4mm taller, with a curve down to the sides?

Sorry If I'm being pickky again, feel free to use rule 1 (or as we say on the railway a Form 1 (discaplinary form!))

Thanks Scott. One reason why I don't want to model the prototype to the n-th degree is because, with limited data via photos, it's easy to "get it wrong". so I'll go with overall trends - so it "looks ok". Please forgive me if I overlook something that's obvious!

The shame about this construction is that its location/angle near the viaduct doesn't make it a prominent feature. BUT there are two other tunnel mouths to do... I'll see what I can come up with there ... another S&C with a bit of character.

Well that's stuffed it, I now can't get my head through the door!

Hope everyone reading this has a decent Chrimble, and heres to a Great modelling 2013!

Nope, I'm onto that. That's an easy thing which I've already incorporated into my plans. No problem Andy - it's good to check things over.

Ok, I'm off for now, though I'll check back here in an hour or so. Cricket from Nagpur at 4am, so I'll probably be up all night!!

Morning Andy. I went "to bed" at 2am, was up at 4am for the cricket, then dozed off.

My god, man - you've bought yourself an N gauge fleet already!! :O Either you're a lottery winner or your wife is very generous!!

Time for COFFEE, then more work on the tunnel mouth. I'm going to my dads this week, but I'll be taking all the gear so I can get on with the job. Anyway, more "steps" to cut...another 60 of them.

How many steps to heaven are you expecting sunshine? :O I can just picture you and your Dad on Christmas day, you cutting steps and him cutting the Turkey and saying, Come on lad itll be cowd, and you can't eat it with a Stanley Knife., :nono: he ho ha ha he he .

Andy

P.S I love Jukebox's pic and caption, is that wind, or have you got something caught in the door?

Jeff and Andy.

Cricket.

I only remember playing cricket a few times. The first was one summer when one of the other kid's dad got us sorted on the footy pitch up the road. Another was on the beach on a summer holiday. Then there was the works inter department match some years back when, despite my incompetence, I received a match certificate for performance - my poor bowling got a credible batsman out! Anyway, we won the match but these days I think I'll stick to modelling.

So, what's the loco, jukebox?

Is that the one going north?

I thought there were only 39?

Despite the firm grip, Jeff still had trouble keeping his thread on track...

I was waiting for the number 39 to appear!! If you look very carefully, you can see Jimmy Paige and Robert Plant on the photo in my previous post!

My wire loom, Andy. Not a problem you'd come across!!!!! :O

Brilliant post. How did you know that the Grainger family eat Christmas dinner with Stanley knives? It's uncanny!!

(while you're at it, Hemyock as well - I'll have that £10 for the plug now, Jim!). A tenner!! it was only a fiver last time, I think you must be saving up for that loco you want LoL.

Just a quick visit this as I have a few things to sort out on the domestic front before normal service resumes. The tunnel portal is looking great though Jeff, especially those steps.

Back soon

Hi Jeff,

Here is a piccie of the souyh portal of Helm tunnel taken in 1971. Shows the side walls with a bit of batter but they are also have a slight curve.

Derek

Thanks very much Derek. Quite a number of similarities with Blea Moor. All these images are useful - I may base the next tunnel mouth on this prototype.

Cheers Jim. I've just spent the last 3 hours socialising, so no further modelling since that. Back to the "grind" now - "steps" on the other side. More pics later.

That portal looks the business Jeff ;)

I'm going to get myself up to date with Kirkby Luneside over a cuppa as we speak :)

Simon

Thanks Simon. There are a lot of pages, but whether there's much content, I leave you to judge!!

Update: I've fitted the drainage "steps" to each wing of the portal. The wings have been thickened up and a cant put onto the inside faces. The PVA is currently drying. The glue should have set by 10pm, so I'll post a couple of photos then.

There's an eerie calm about the forum today. Maybe some people are exhausted after having a good "Hornby revelation froth". The P2 and Duke of Gloucester look nice, but I've plenty to keep me going in the meantime. Now where's that rogue Andy P with his plan to buy out the entire N gauge stock of Hattons?! :O
