First dozen or so Class 37 detail diffrences - quick question!

I'm thinking of doing a model of pioneer Class 37, 37350/D6700 and I'm begining to look around for a subitable model to start my project on.

The thing is, my mind's gone blank! I seem to vaguly remember that the first dozen or so Class 37s were diffrent in some regards to the subsequent ones. What were the diffrences? Had it something to do with the horns or the grills perhaps?

Thanks in advance :)

D6700 - D6705 had the extra vertical bar, the cantrail grille was actually different to the RSH machiens in that it was originally removable. This was picked up by Bachmann when they did 37003 for c37lg. The split box RSH machines were 37069 - 37095

Not quite, they just haven't done the particular version you need. Having modelled 350 in the guise you describe, best bet is to get hold of the release that was 37035 in dutch and add the dividing bars using etch brass strip cut to length and do a respray.

I've still got the itch to do 37350 in green, late 1980s conidition.....

As it would only require some minor work to the nose doors, buffers, and the cantrail grills, would I be correct in thinking that Bachmann's 37049 (32-783DS) would be a very suitable doner, or am I missing something?

37350 and 37001-004 had the extra framework round the cantrail grills. 37350 also had the skirts replaced and the headcodes glazed when in green so I assume the 37003 model is spot on for it in green? Do you want to do it in Petrolium sector grey?

As it's preserved there must be some better pics of it out there showing the grills!

The Bachmann sound model of br blue 37049 has the lip under the grills and other older features so may be best using that one thou you'd need to change the noses to the flush ones to model 350 in any guise pre ews celeb green!

If you can get the noses as spares then its a fairly easy straight forward job to do and also the exhaust port on the roof will need filling but again not a massive job, i'm actually thinking of modelling 350 in peky sector as she was a beast thou I don't like her now with full valance and everything back as I saw her in the 90's so her current guise was way before my time fotting trains!

Thank you gentlemen for your answers.

I would have used 37035 as a doner, but second hand they seem to fetch quite some money. I'm not sure why that is.

I have a 37035 but if it's worth a few bob it seems a shame to use the one I've got. That's why I was thinking of going for a 37049

I was awaer about the cantrail grills. I think that should be easy enough to fix with some plastic strips - it will need repainting anyway.....

Also the nose doors shouldn't be much of a problem to rectify.

It was just I was wondering if there were any other detail diffrences between 049 and 350 that I may have missed.

I think I'll have to get my hands on one of these then :P

Thanks again!!

Got round to it, after finally finding a suitable doner.....
Original intentions were to use a D6717 body with noses from 37035, however my idea didn't work out because D6717 doesn't have removable noses!
So, I ended up reworking the noses of D6717.

This is what I started with.....
I must admit, being a bit of a collector, I actually felt quite bad about about cutting this Limited Edition one up.

Having done my research I believed the green D6717 body to be correct for D6700/37350 in 1980/90s condition.
However, I overlooked these details. I only discovered them once the project was well underway.
Rather than go for a total repaint, I can live with it. Also because one of my reasons for using D6717 was so that I wouldn't have to repaint it!

Here we can see how I went about renovating the noses and removing the buffer skirts.....

Transfers and linning.
I had couldn't find anybody willing to produce the scripts/decals that go under the numbers, so I improvised......

Bogies were a big problem..... D6717 came with fabricated ones, wheras D6700/37350 had cast ones back in the 1980/90s (although incidently, I saw it at the NRM a few months ago and it now has fabricated ones!)
Basically my options were:
a) Bachmann cast Class 37 bogies (virtually impossible to find anywhere)
b ) Bachmann Deltic bogies
c) Hornby Class 50 bogies with some modifications
d) modify the Bachmann fabricated ones.
I was pretty much decided on going with option C, but I thought before I spend about £30 on a set of Class 50 bogies I may as well have a go at modifying the ones that I already had on the doner model.
I spent a couple of afternoons cutting the lips off with a sharp kinfe, then I added some plasticard to the outer ends to represent the break apparatus. Filler was then added to this area. Then with some fine grade sandpaper I smothed it as well as I could. Finally I painted it.
As can be seen from this photo (along with a Class 50 and another Class 37 for comparison) I think the results are not perfect, but quite ok.

This is it finished. Not quite as I had envisioned, due to the yellow paint application not being as good as I had hoped, and then the varnish reacted somehow, although I think it gives it a sort of weathered appearance. On the whole I'm quite happy with it.
(A couple more photos can be found on my Bath Road page, see link below)
