RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted July 20, 2012 RMweb Gold Share Posted July 20, 2012 I think I've posted these on a previous forum but.. Atlantic Dock Junction - the line to the left leads to Canada Dock, the line to the right leads to Alexander Dock and the main line leads to Edge Hill via Anfield / Tuebrook / Stanley The box was burnt down - it's second time, note the BR top on the LNWR base - this time it didn't rise like a phoenix, after temporary working was instituted for a few weeks the box was abolished and only the Edge Hill - Alex. dock line remains
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted July 20, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted July 20, 2012 And the changes over a roughly 20 year period. Taken from the cab of 60097 when I was kindly given a ride from Liverpool docks - Edge Hill, with a lot of coal hanging off the back
MarkC
When did the 'box get burnt down the first time? I'm trying to recall what it looked like when I used to regularly travel that way - I preferred getting the DMU if possible, rather than the 502s into Exchange. Mainly for the view . I can't recall the 'box in detail, sadly, but I do recall seeing the occasional freight sat at the junction, waiting to follow us to Tuebrook & then towards Edge Hill. Some memories coming back, seeing your photos. Thanks for putting them up Mark
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted December 26, 2012 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 26, 2012 Hi Mark, Mid 1970s was the first time it succumbed to arson around. There was a whisper around the railway that it was an inside job, someone senior who was trying to force closure, whether this was rumour or fact will probably never be known. MarkC
Ah, thanks for that - must have been about the tiime of the Southport service withdrawal then. Yes, 'wheels within wheels' is a possibility, but as you say, the truth may never now come out. I have to say, I didn't realise until I found it on Gurgle Earth, just how close the location is to the TMD - that comes of having not lived in the area since 1979... Cheers Mark

Town Green Signalman
From what I got told a timber BR LMR Type 15 top was hastily placed on top of Atlantic Dock Junction after the first fire, using second hand parts from New Lane. BR LMR seemed quite fond of reusing whole (& parts) of Type 15 Signal Boxes (obviously before the portakabin era).
RMweb Premium kevinlms Posted August 29, 2013 RMweb Premium Share Posted August 29, 2013 Fascinating photos of an interesting place, Beast. Immortalised by Jack Nelson's dioramas of course. Although I suspect the signalman usually found the site a rather boring view. A plus would presumably be that it wasn't that windy.
RMweb Gold beast66606 Posted August 30, 2013 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted August 30, 2013 From what I got told a timber BR LMR Type 15 top was hastily placed on top of Atlantic Dock Junction after the first fire, using second hand parts from New Lane. That's a possibilty, I can't recall the closing date of New Lane. Fascinating photos of an interesting place, Beast. Immortalised by Jack Nelson's dioramas of course. The signalman used to sit outside on a deck chair - during summer of course !

Town Green Signalman
Just had a look at my notes,Regarding New Lane/Atlantic Dock Jct SBs New Lane BR LMR Type 15 box opened 14th Dec 1958 - closed 16th Dec 1973 (adjacent LC converted to AHB operation, supervised by Burscough Bridge Jct) Atlantic Dock Junction torched in arson attack in 1976 (with the replacement top being constructed mainly from parts that were second hand from New Lane box). Second (& final) arson attack at Atlantic Dock Jct taking place around March/April 1980. Hope this helps.
