Hi Polly,

Guess what deal one of the 4144 gang and I have?! I am doing No. 4073 as No. 4079 with No. 5011s tender and No. 5011 will become No. 5000 with No. 4073s tender as per the time she was on trial with the LMS. My friend will buy No. 5000 from me and we both get interesting Castles! My No. 4079 is going into GWR style BR livery with BRITSH RAILWAYS in the Egyptian Serif font. Much less repainting that way - just a bit of extra lining to remove...

Everyone's a winner!

All the best,

Castle

Now that I like (after several attempts to get it together!).

I've been thinking of using 5011 for 5029.  I think I mentioned it before but I've recently noticed that 5029 has carried a British Railways liveried tender in the last few years which is why I'm happy to donate 5029's tender to 4079.  I'll have to look out for a British Railways one for 5029.

Never a dull moment.

Best wishes.

Hi Chris.

The roof would follow the Southall pattern of shallow slope on the west end and steep slope on the east end.  On the second photo of the mockup it looks as though the fall is the same on both sides - just a quirk of the camera's wide angle lens on the perspective I guess.

I'd also consider printing out the windows on clear acetate.  The wall isn't flat either with several bays and at least one top light though it looks straightforward enough to put together. I'll be happy enough to capture the essence of the building with a few of those key features.

Polly

Interesting observation today.  The last northlight slope on the east end is vertical.

http://www.prorail.co.uk/BWselection.php?id=306

This morning, I added the diesel shed outer (north) wall, the top wall of the west end and a stores/mess building on the south wall. Photos were dreadful so I'll try again tomorrow but saved the best of the bunch for the record.

post-14049-0-25771300-1400106535.jpg

I still have to do the diesel shed extension (east end) and also those ventilators so it looks like I'll be busy for a few days.

It might be worth getting some scenic paper (corrugated sheeting and brick walling) to give it some definition and character.

Hi all.

As you can see from the pic in the above post, the mockup shed is held together with masking tape.

Good move that as I will need to lower the height of the side building especially towards the front edge of the shed. Compare the model with this long distance view - you don't see the side building sticking out as on the model. [Edit.  The building you see on the right is in front of the shed and is free standing.]

https://www.flickr.com/photos/southwesternrailways/6813698242/

I took the shape from a diagram of the building's footprint.  Above ground it has a life of its own with different heights, bays, and overhangs. But can I find a picture of the side building in a single photo?  NOPE.  But you can get the gist of it by piecing together different images.

So...

The aim is to replicate the style as far as possible given the smaller dimensions of the model.

That's enough for one night.  Thanks for reading.

Going back a bit I have used one of those shovels on King Edward never thought to take a photo of the shovel! Was too hard but we were stopped at Tysley easier than the cadbury tank where room was so tight it was a flick round the corner rather than a throw.

Also a bit confused about the tour it does look very much like one I went on but the route back from Reading was different was there a similar tour in 64? 65 rather late for me trains had given way to motorbikes.

I think the mock up are working well fine tuning will give the best result.

Evening all.  We had a good day at MRX LYDCC on Saturday and to my delight found a very nicely weathered 6869 Resolven Grange (Southall 1962-64) at Grimy Times.

Hi Don.  Did you take any other photos - King Edward, for instance?

I got the Thames Valley tour details from Sixbells Junction, The Railtour Files. Is your tour on there, perhaps?

An update.

I've been doing a bit of digging around trying to find out about branch line traffic in 2011.

First off - Aggregates as at Day & Sons: http://www.daygroup.co.uk/about-us.php

From the video, "Brentford Branch Line"  (GWRPreservationGroup), my EWS 66 could haul a couple of Yeoman JHA Bogie Aggregrate Hoppers - if I can find any. The 66 in the video is EWS 66248 “Vale of Glamorgan.”  You'll notice from the video that sprinklers are in operation to keep the dust down so making for some interesting weathering.

Or, maybe a couple of JGA hoppers as in the 2011 photo by nick86235

http://nick86235.smugmug.com/Trains/2011/Spring-is-in-the-air-allegedly/i-c4gQbrC/A

So, if you have any comments or suggestion....they'd be most welcome.

Next time, I'll take a look at creating a West London binliner.

Further to yesterday.

Ex-RMC JGA Hoppers might be easier to model - maybe I could get away with just one!

Seems there may be a few examples of the Angerstein Wharf-Brentford run out there such as this one of 66020 uploaded on flikr 31 May 2011:

https://flic.kr/p/9Pt5qA

There's also the Bachmann model to look out for : 37-326  90 Ton JGA glw bogie hopper wagon "RMC" to which could be added DB Schenker-style blocking out of the logo and some heavy weathering.

A week and a half gone already since our trip south.

Thought it was time I got some pics up.

We had a great week in Southern territory on the Mid Hants Railway but I'll begin with a birthday at Didcot on our return home and the action was already beginning as we queued at the ticket office.

Hi Polly and Ray,

Great to see you and Ray again! Glad you enjoyed yourselves too!

The movement of No. 4079 was the first time we have moved it with all the valve gear in place since it was stripped out in 2000 so it was great you could see her on that day. It was moved with pinch bars by my team and I had to ride on top of the frames as I had to see that everything was going in and out, up and down and so on as it should. Well, that was my excuse... It was very strange to see it all going round after looking at it as bits for so long! For others that were not there it went beautifully with very little effort so she should be good when we add a bit of steam...

Come again soon!

All the best,

Castle

Hi Jaz,

I have helped look after No. 4079 for many years now. She is referred to by my partner as 'the other woman' - in jest and good faith I hasten to add, she is very understanding!

If you go to my profile page you should see the avatar picture in its entirety - as I produced it, feel free to use it for the wall if you want!

All the best,

Chasing trains, next installment.  :locomotive:

On the Mid Hants Railway which turned into quite a What next? sort of week.

Thinking of GWRd, of course, it was a chance to get the feel of the real thing.

After the delights of Southen locos Lord Nelson and Cheltenham at Alton, we spotted the yard at Ropley.

And still more.  On leaving Alresford Station the day before, we came across a tender in the forecourt.  Our journey back to the farm where we were staying was somewhat delayed while we took photos, tried to find out when the other half was to be delivered, and watched the cab and trailer while it was prepared to depart.

Well, what do you know?

On the Severn Valley Railway - our next stop of Chasing Trains after leaving Didcot - I grabbed a picture of 1501 which was standing just outside the shed.

post-14049-0-23991400-1404509995.jpg

Recognising the number, I was a bit confused as it carried the Old Oak Common shed plate. This called for a bit of digging.

Checking brdatabase and railuk, I found that 1501 was allocated to Southall from Old Oak 30/11/1950 and withdrawn 01/1961, sold to the NCB at Coventry along with 1502 and 1509, and finally bought by the SVR.

Now, an 81C shed plate would look mighty attractive, don't you think?

Hi Polly, just having a quick catch up and as its better to look at pics than try to read text you have given me plenty to feast my WONKY eyes upon.

Like George I was HORRIFIED to see Bodmin in such a sorry state, George and I have spent many a happy hour both watching and riding behind her at the Mid Hant's.

Love all the pics well done and that's what I call a proper holiday.

Jaz,

On the picture above of 1501 it is at the bottom of the smokebox door and in this case it is 81A.  If you look carefully at the pictures of Bodmin you can also see it but not the number.

In steam days, and probably now as well although it may be more complicated, there were sheds all over the country that were responsible for supplying locomotives for the trains in their area.  They had an allocation of various types for different jobs and I assume that the were responsible for looking after them.  It would mean that if a Southall engine had worked a train from Paddington to Bristol, that it would get worked back again and not up to Chester as it was clear where it came from.  Also the crew might have something to say about it unless they were sent back on another locomotive before the one they brought was ready to go back.

I am sure others can add to the answer.
