peak experience
hi all. i'm hoping to make a small depot scene .. the two road shed at Tyne Yard seems ideal for my needs. I've searched the internet/flickr sites for suitable photos but most have a loco strategically placed in front of the shed, alongside etc.. i'd like to get as close as possible to the original design..i'd rather model something 'real' as opposed to freelance modelling. if any of you folks out their can help me with building plans, track plans, photos, drawings etc i'd be most grateful..i'm modelling the BR Blue period. many thanks. South of 1E
Apologies for the poor Kodak instamatic quality and the depot is very much in the background. If nothing else you have a prototypical "booked" accor locals of the likes of 20210n214 dropping in on the "Tinsley freight" late afternoon in June 77 cheers NR www.leightonlogs.org
peak experience
excellent gen...I've only come across one other pic of a class 20 and that was in a sector livery... I've chosen to model the shed here so I could display classes 03, 08, 20, 25, 26, 27, 31, 37, 40, 45, 46, 47, 55, and 56 .. I could back date my preferred period slightly and have class 17, and 24 locos too. I've a good bet that class 50 would have got this far north too on Doncaster test trains. I've yet to see evidence of a class 33, 44 or a 58 though.
johndon
I've a good bet that class 50 would have got this far north too on Doncaster test trains. They definitely made it on the test train, I've seen pics of them at Bensham so they would have certainly gone past Tyne Yard. John
johndon
I've yet to see evidence of a class 33 33103 made it but a long time after the period you are modelling: http://www.flickr.com/photos/emdjt42/5497074184/in/set-72157615587879220 John

RMweb Gold DaveF Posted November 18, 2013 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 18, 2013 These are the only two of mine I can find showing the shed, sorry they are so distant but better access was just about impossible. peak experience
many thanks johndon but alas this is the heavily altered shed and layout that differed greatly from the one that existed in the early 80's... thanks all for the further gen...looks like very few classes of loco never made it to tyne yard. Rail-Online
Hi, Class 50's also occasionally came across from Carlisle on freight services in the period after the WCML was fully electrified and before they were finally all sent to the Western Region. I seem to recall visiting a signal box in 1980 on the Carlisle to Newcastle line and one coming through about midnight! They were used on all kinds of secondary duties in that period. tony
Fat Controller
I saw a couple of 58s on running-in turns on the Doncaster test train in 1983 or '84.
6Y99
In 1997 Knottingley North Link and some of the Ex National Power Ferrybridge men learned Tyne Yard and so they did not get stranded waiting for a late running south bound coal job or to get a 60 back into Scotland we used to give them a 58 to take this way they a ride back home at least if there southbound job was running late. johndon
many thanks johndon but alas this is the heavily altered shed and layout that differed greatly from the one that existed in the early 80's... I knew that the shed had been extended but I didn't know that the track layout had changed that much. John
johndon
Another thought - if you go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html - they have a 1:2500 map of Lamesley from 1991 and, having had a look at it, it is prior to the shed being extended so you'd be able to get the track plan at least. You can then either zoom in or, even better, for a few quid you can order a PDF copy of the map. I've done this for a location I'm planning on modelling and it enabled me to nail down the track plan. Alcanman
I used to visit Tyne Yard quite a lot during the early 80s. Sadly, the only pic I can find is 08544 taken on 8th Feb 1981. On shed that day, a Sunday IIRC, were 03021 08544,08254,08370 31278,31275,31237,31288,31187,31289,31139 37066,37216,37042,37019,37193 45004,45054 47311. Gobrien
If you use the birds eye view on Bing Maps, you'll get some great shots with a 360 degree view of the whole yard like the one below:John Hi guys can any one explain what is in this photo I'm trying to model a modern depot and want to know the layout of the depot. I.e. Bottom right there appears to be track pits and white boxes in between tracks is this the fueling point. If anybody can label this photo with what is what that would be great Thanks Graeme
North Eastern
Tyne Yard taken on taken on the 11/8/16. I have some more photo's taken inside and around the shed if you are interested? If you are PM me with your email address, as it will be easier than having to re-size everything to fit on here. Regards Chris

Will Crompton
There is a nice picture here from 1969. A couple of Peaks by the side of the depot. Comparing this with the recent pictures it is easier to see which bits are the 'add ons' https://www.flickr.com/photos/blue-diesels/3837172622/in/album-72157624287775811/ Beware if like me you like Railblue - this flickr site (John Turner's Albums) has a lot of rabbit holes. Oh dear, I may be some time!
Will Crompton
Here's another one for the John Turner Flickr site from 1974. It shows the side walls of the depot more clearly but from further away. https://www.flickr.com/photos/blue-diesels/8450431388/in/album-72157621953613656/
RMweb Gold russ p Posted June 5, 2020 RMweb Gold Share Posted June 5, 2020 York men knew 20s and worked to Tyne so I suppose they could have occasionally ended up on the shed if the needed fuel or water or they didn't work back for whatever reason. The occasionally turned up at thornaby before they were allocated there and local drivers signing them When I was secondman on the shed and unofficially we moved locos about and something out of the ordinary turned up such as 20,25 or 45 I would play dumb and move it saying to the driver I didn't know you didn't sign them its just a loco!
