dave1905
Just finished putting a side boom on opposite corners and walked a loaded auto rack off the right of way.
dave1905
Another division of RJ Corman just showed up, 2 Cats on flatbeds with two other trucks with booms and couterweights, plus a truck of flood lights.
shortliner
That is a great clear picture - you can see each individual link in a chain on one of the low loaders
dave1905
If you were watching earlier, they put a sidebooom on the far end of a car that was sideways to pick it up and then had the backhoe use its boom to keep the car upright. The sideboom rotated the car parallel to the tracks. One more sideboom came up, and was put on th ecorner opposite the first sideboom and the two picked up the auto rack and walked away with it. The then used the backhoe to drag the Ford that had fallen out of that railcar, after bringing up a side boom so they could use the torch on the sideboom to cut away som metal that was keeping the Ford from being dragged. dave1905
Queuing up a couple sidebooms and the backhoe to move the car with the end in the air. Will probabluse the backhoe to steady the car so it doesn't tip over and use the cats to drag iit off the dump.
dave1905
Car has been drug into position where the sidebooms can get on the car and pick it up.
shortliner
Those guys certainly work as a team, and know what they are doing!
Talltim
What do they do with the cars once they've moved them?
Talltim
Is the brown rack at the right of the picture on the track?
dave1905
Yes the brown track is on the main track (or near it, it looks to be derailed also).
dave1905
The autos will be removed from the cars and sold for scrap. The railcars will either berepaired enough to be rerailed or will be cut up and either trucked out or loaded onto rail cars and hauled out.
Talltim
Does anyone make a model sideboom?
TotalLamer
Fun fact for anyone who's interested in the slang. Railroaders call those things "sidewinders". As for the clean-up crews themselves, from all the stories I've been told by older guys, they're damn near magic. Doesn't matter where you are when you get on the ground, they show up practically before you can even call the dispatcher about it. Unload the bulldozers and plow a path through ANYTHING to get to the tracks. It's kind of insane.
Talltim
Is that half an articulated rack?
shortliner
What is almost unbelievable is watching the sidewinders work as a team, all moving together to carry the car like formation flying - and the delicacy with which they handle the tonnage is amazing

Talltim
Strangely they seem to be putting the track panels together next to the road. Apparently it's being investigated as an act of vandalism
pointstaken
Always thought it was "Burlington Northern Santa Fe", not "Burlington National Santa Fe". Dennis
dave1905
It is Burlington NORTHERN Santa Fe. Sometimes they will assemble several panels and then move the assemble panels into place, a 78 or 120 ft panel instead of a 39 ft panel.
laurenceb
It is Burlington NORTHERN Santa Fe. Sometimes they will assemble several panels and then move the assemble panels into place, a 78 or 120 ft panel instead of a 39 ft panel. For the last 10 years it has been the B N S F Railway. There is a comment in the Dec Trains about the name. Laurence
