Evening all,
Having spent the last couple weeks dipping in and out of the build of my second building, I decided to return to the postal depot and make a start in the canopy which runs right across the entire front of the building.
This particular part of the building will be built in situ but not glued into place so that I can remove it for spray painting as it will be in the same red as the rest of the building. Once finished and painted, I will then glue into position.I’ve built up a set of joists which fit nicely in between the two sheets of plastic I used for the first floor base. These are 2mm square strip with the ends slightly shaved down so they fit snug into the gap. Photo below.
I then removed them and added them to the pre-cut base of the canopy. I’m trying to make this a relatively strong part of the building in case it gets knocked while cleaning the track that will run alongside it.
Here is the progress so far. I’m also using the 2mm strip to build up the inside structure of the canopy. On top of this will be some sheet more plasticard to represent the roof of the canopy. The front and sides will have the same plated effect like below the windows of the building.
At the moment the canopy can be slid in and out so I can work on it.
Still lots to do!
Best regards,
Jeremy

Looks superb! Very very well done.
I passed the real building in Thun last week and thought about your project!
i have used
Scalescenes sheets several times. They can give a superb result but just be careful to seal them once you are finished with Matt varnish. If they are left untreated they are suspectible to water staining even from a drop or two.
regards,
peter
Thank you Peter. Great tip on the scalescenes thanks. Do you brush paint on the varnish or spray on? I assume Matt varnish?Best regards,

A side by side of the 2x different orange coaches, they won't be running next to each other!
And a side by side with a minitrix Eurocity, the stripes line up much better than with the Arnold FS coach.
So what's my intended use for this 1st class Eurofima? For the moment it will run as a 'stand in' on a standard green EW iv/RIC set. A lot of RE 4/4ii hauled services seemed to consist of 2x 2nd RIC, 2x 2nd EW iv, 2x 1st EW iv, and a baggage van, but I've seen versions with the 2x 1st class coaches replaced by grey Eurocity coaches and other colour/types of coaches filling in as required (including random individual orange coaches). I've a Roco 1st class EW iv on it's way from German, so for the pics below the Fleischmann 2nd is being used as a stand in. Lighting was a struggle, but I'm happy with the way this train looks.
Onto freight vehicles. Everything I've got in the box so far was DB rather than SBB, and a lot of it vintage 1970s! So I've picked up some SBB Roco vans so freight can pretend to be in the right country.
Very nice models, and match similar Minitrix models nicely.
Finally, to upset the purists, I'm reaching enough wagons that a 2nd freight is starting to take shape. I don't know why, but the child in me has always liked bright colourful tank wagons, in particular the Minitrix 2x and 4x axle tankers. The first 3 wagons behind the engine in this set I bought back in the early 90s when I had British outline stock, the Texaco and DEA are recent purchases and there's another different coloured bogie BP in the post too. Somewhere in one of the old stock boxes is a 1970s Minitrix 2x axle BP tank that needs a little TLC so that will get added to the rake as well if it's fixable. The aim is to have no 2 wagons the same...... it doesn't need to be a long rake, as long as it looks good behind the AE 6/6 and upsets some people as well as adding a big splash of colour to the future layout.
I like your mixed stock coach rake. Very typical of Swiss rakes at the time. A nice collection of stock there!Best regards,
Jeremy

Evening all,
Having replaced my airbrush with a new one, it was time to get the main colours onto the the postal building. I spent some time trying to get the main red colour of the building as close to the prototype as possible. Whilst on a trip to our local heritage railway and browsing the model railway shop, I found a pot of railmatch BR crimson which I thought might just be the ticket. I painted a small area and left to dry. It looked rubbish to be honest, so back to the drawing board and decided to get out all of my railmatch paints that were a shade of red. I then decided to mix up a little rail red and BR crimson together….and hey presto, I had something which was finally going to work. So here are the results. There is still loads to do with all the roof detailing, third coat of yellow on the doors, glazing, canopy over the platform area….and the list goes on!
For the platform surface, I’m going to experiment with some scalescenes concrete paper and see how it comes out. Has anyone used this, and if so, how did you find it?
Anyway, here are some progress photos.
Best regards,
Jeremy

Morning all,
Latest addition to the rolling stock fleet arrived yesterday in the shape fo the newly released RE620 loco from Kato. Very pleased with it although they could of added the handrails as separate items as with their newly released Re4/4's. Seems they have stuck with the moulded types, shame really as this would of enhanced the model. However, its not all doom and gloom as they have updated the pantographs which look far better than those on the original batches of models.
Best regards,
Jeremy

Afternoon all,
I’ve been making some steady progress in the current build and have been building up the layers to the front. With a bit of filler added to hide the small gaps here and there!
The little corner sections above each window have been cut out individually and seperately fitted. It’s now finished so I’m on to the first of the two sides now.
The back will front onto the layout and will be just a solid piece of plasticard as the building will be partially low relief to the front of the layout.
Best regards,
Jeremy

Just to follow up my own post, sadly after spending a bit of time observing the real thing in more detail (amazing what trivial things you notice that you never would unless modelling!) - sadly it's not possible to easily modify an 800 into an 801.
The good news first - the 800/2 and 801/1 both have a driving trailer at each end with a pantograph and no underfloor engine. As far as I have been able to decipher, these vehicles (1 & 5) are identical on both types of unit.
Vehicle 2 - I can't be 100% sure as I need to see more angles of the real thing but I believe these are also identical on both types (this is the vehicle on the 801/1 EMU which houses the backup power unit for low-speed rescue movement and backup power in the event of OHLE failure). What I'm not certain of is whether there are any subtle differences or whether this is a regular full-fat power unit with the same appearance as the 800/2 bi-mode.
Vehicles 3 & 4 - this is what scuppers the plan to simply renumber the unit to an 801. The exhaust ports on the roof could be easily cut & filed away, The issue is the underside cowlings have a lot more vents & maintenance access detail on the 800/2 due to the diesel engines. The attached photo shows the comparison between a vehicle 4 (pulled from a useful video on YouTube showing an 800/801 combo on diversion at Carlisle, credit to the videographer).
If I haven't missed anything obvious - it's relatively good news as the underbody shroud clips off easily as I found out when I had to repair my driveshaft from postage damage, so hopefully Kato have tooled for the EMU version further down the line. I'm still not optimistic about the 9-car versions as that also brings different bogies into the equation.
So as lovely as the LNER 800/2 model is, it's only really useful at the moment if you're modelling Lincoln or Harrogate
Hang in there though. Kato have produced countless versions of the French TGV, some with just minor differences, so you never know, they may produce a 9 car version in the future. -

It would appear at least one TOC will have a need for these locos on class 1 Anglo-Scottish expresses…good news!
Jack.
What a waste of money. Class 91’s would be far more cost effective. And still using MK4 stock. -
Good evening,
So I had a hunt around for something suitable to use as a template. Unfortunately the lolly sticks my wife bought were not suitable
Looking through my modelling tool box my set of tweezers looked like they could fit the bill for each half of the semi circle. So I tried them out on one semi circle and with some careful and light scoring working through the plastic, it worked! So here are the results, it’s not perfect but it’s good enough I think.
Best regards,
Jeremy

Hi Keith,
That overall view of the layout is brilliant, what a picture! It's like looking out of the window at the real railway and that would be what you would see. Cracking work and look forward to some more videos!

Its nice to see the class 90's soldiering on! Shame there's a few rotting away at Crewe, such a waste as they could have been put back to work years ago rather than left to rot and more than likely end up on the scrap heap. Same can be said for the class 60's at Toton, we seem to be very wasteful as a country when it comes to rolling stock.

Jeremy

Looks like another epic build for us to enjoy. Looking forward to seeing them on the layout when the time comes.
Thanks Keith. Hopefully will not take as long as the previous one. I'm hoping to get the layout back up and running this coming week as I have had to make a few minor changes to the baseboards. Also hope to start scratch building my turnouts using copper clad sleepers from the 2mm association and code 55 rail from C&L fine scale.
