  1. Found it! Set 244 appears on p6 of S&D Files No. 4. The number is very clear. Date 4 Feb 1961. 44560 is pulling it out of Bath on the 3.20 to Templecombe.
  2. Thanks for the replies CM and Paul. Delayed response from me - modelling has had to go on the back burner for some while. Set 244. Can anyone recall where to find the 1961 S&D photo of this set? Other Maunsell sets. Are these unidentified sets like set 244? David Gould’s book. I don’t have it but would be content to use No. 244 so don’t need any other numbers. I shall continue to run the coaches I have for now but will keep on the lookout for Hornby’s R4458 set, though several internet searches have produced nothing at all. Will keep eyes open at shows. Cheers. Tim.
  3. Renumbering would be easier than spraying. Other class 3 tanks ran on the S&D - 82002, 4, 39, 41, and 44 did according to http://sdjr.net/locolist.html. Earlier posts confirm 82004 and 41 were green and I think 44 was. So would 82002 or 84039 be appropriate new numbers?
  4. With there being few of the S&D Maunsell sets around to buy, I purchased the following 3 Hornby green coaches separately: R4305B and R4305D (both BR Maunsell 6 compartment brakes) and R4304A (BR Maunsell composite). Do these together comprise the same formation as the S&D set and can I run them with confidence on an S&D layout without fear of being told “that’s wrong”?! Set numbers needed of course but thanks for the advice on withdrawal dates; I shall avoid choosing 392 0r 393. Anyone know who produces the correct size and style for these set numbers?
  5. (Sorry about the brief earlier post. Seems that pressing the tab key sends the incomplete message!) Phil's post reminded me that I have a small collection of dated model magazines that featured SDJR layouts, going back in time as follows: October 2012. Hornby Magazine. Lourie Poulton's Evercreech Junction (00) April 1993 BRM. The layout mentioned by Phil was "Midsomer Norton and Welton" (not Wellow). October 1988 Railway Modeller. Radstock in 00 by Roger Willerton. My own club's layout, destroyed by fire many years ago some time after it had been sold, featured in the following: July 1984. Railway Modeller. Evercreech Junction - research and planning. Shipley Model Railway Society. June 1984. Railway Modeller. Evercreech Junction - Railway of the Month (00). Shipley Model Railway Society.
  6. Phil's post reminded me that I have a small collection of dated model magazines that featured SDJR layouts, going back in time as follows: April 1993 BRM.
  7. I’ve been trying to identify the trains shown on the Steam Tube video in Karhedron’s posting. There seem to be 8: 1. 0.15 secs. The 4-6-0 with the large tender is likely to be 75071/72 or 73. The train is probably the 6.35 Evercreech-Poole and looks to be passing without shunting. 2. 0.45 secs. 75008 would have brought the 2 milk tankers out of the creamery sidings and is shown running round them and setting off northwards along with a van. Northbound milk tankers used to be added to either the up mail at 4.15 (using loco from the 3.05 up freight from Poole) or at 4.45 - the return of the 3.35 Templecombe-Blandford. But I see from my 1955 WTT that there was also a 5.30 milk train from Bailey Gate that ran as required to Templecombe Upper. Perhaps 75008 was working this service. Note the passenger headcode. 3. 2.15 mins. Again probably 75071/2 or 3 perhaps on the return 3.35 or 5.30. 4. 2.22 mins. Yet again probably 75071/2 or 3 on the 6.35 Evercreech-Poole. 5. 2.37 mins. Same occasion as 3. above. 6. 3.17 mins. 80XXX tanks heads towards Broadstone at Corfe Mullen, mainly hauling vans. Would this be the rump of the Blandford fertiliser service from Avonmouth that was diverted off the S&D via Poole using Bournemouth engines? I photographed a very similar train in August 1965. 7. 3.40 mins. Up passenger at Corfe Mullen. Very little detail. 8. 3.54 mins. 4691 with bogie van and 1/2 milk tankers. Would this be the 5.30 also? Freight headcode this time. Some questions about this 5.30 departure: 1. How often did it run? 2. Did it continue until the end of the S&D? 3. How did the loco get to Bailey Gate? (There seems to be nothing in the WTT that would bring the loco from Templecombe.) 4. What was the point of it when it seems to duplicate the 4.45 departure?
  8. Even more super shots. Your “visit 1”: Scan 24. A double headed branch passenger train. Surely a big rarity, apart from specials? Scan 25. The other 2-6-2 looks very much like 41249 when enlarged and did appear on some of your other pics. Scan 30. The taller of the two men on the platform was Vic Freak. Your “Nearly the end”: Scan 35. Memories of my last S&D trip. I could be on that shot in the crowd at Glastonbury! All your shots seem very sharp. You must have had a good camera. Thanks again. Tim.
  9. More magnificent pictures and more memories stirred. I may even have photographed some of the same trains whilst on a bike ride from Poole to Shepton Mallet! The freight hauled by 48444 (scans 36-8) would have been going to Wincanton. I saw what I think was the same train arrive there on 3rd August 1965, a Tuesday, and shunt the vans into the Cow and Gate factory sidings. I’ve posted my pictures of it on flickr along with the others I took that day at https://www.flickr.com/photos/tingleytim/sets/72157643308141063/ The freight had one light and one dark mineral wagon before some vans, just like the train in your pictures, and the sequence of light and dark roofs on the vans could be the same. Do you know which of these pics were taken on the same day, perhaps from negative numbers? If they were the same day, then I believe I can tell you that the 2-6-4 tank would have been 80094 arriving to take over the 16.13 Evercreech to Bournemouth service, the carriages for which can be seen in the distance in the centre road on scan 35. Scan 33/34. Could be the 14.18 Highbridge to Templecombe which I saw at Horsington on 3/8/65. Same loco, coach and van. Scan 20/21. Probably the up mail, due Shepton at 18.14. 73051 hauled it on 28/7, 30/7, 2/8 and 3/8. Scans 28-34. Looks like you could have travelled to Highbridge on the 13.15 from Evercreech (41290) and returned on the 14.18 to Templecombe (41223). But that only gives you 5 minutes at Highbridge - not long enough to slot in 41249 as well? Both 41223 and 41290 were working branch passenger trains on 3/8/65. Cheers. Tim.
  10. The other locations are: Scan 17 Pylle. Westbound branch train. Scan 18 Wyke Champflower. 76056 on southbound train. Scan 19 Wyke Champflower. Northbound train. Might be 73012. Scan 20 Masbury station. Class 5 steaming well after several miles of 1 in 50. Can’t make out the loco number on my screen. Scan 28 Near Masbury summit. 80146 on northbound train. Scan 29 Pylle. Eastbound train. Scan 15 at Stalbridge looks very much like the 15.35 “Milkie” Templecombe to Blandford and Bailey Gate. Could be 80059 which you photographed at Templecombe. Your run round sequence at Binegar is terrific! I rode the 6.05 local from Bath just once in early April 1964 so at 7 o’clock in the evening there wasn’t much light and my pictures were rubbish whereas you had a beautiful evening. It was the same engine but three carriages that day for some reason. They had to be dragged uphill clear of the crossover before 82041 could run round, the crossover being between the platforms. I can’t recall seeing any printed pictures of the return service to Bath which left Binegar at 7.10. I had to wait there until 7.57 for the last train to Poole. Very much enjoyed your photos. Many thanks. Tim.
  11. Great pictures, Dave. The ones inside Bath shed are just as clear and sharp even though the light must have been very poor. Wish there were photos showing as much detail of the roof structure at Templecombe as yours do at Bath. Your Midsomer Norton shots remind me of when I watched another Radstock “Jinty” 47506 performing a shunting manoeuvre up at Binegar. See https://www.flickr.com/photos/tingleytim/7093545909/ and https://www.flickr.com/photos/tingleytim/6947554166/ You mentioned Radstock at the top of your last posting but all the shots were of Midsomer Norton. Do you have some of Radstock? Many thanks. Tim.
  12. Dave, Thanks from me too for the extra pictures. There’s a wealth of detail that will be really useful, from buildings to lamps and ground conditions. They’ve triggered a few questions/ thoughts: 1. One of the first three you posted was taken from Throop Road and I thought it was looking over the tender of a 2P. One of your later postings was taken from a few feet further along clearly on the same day and shows that it was a 4F not a 2P. Always looking for a reason to sift through Ivo’s books again, I noticed that a couple of 4Fs he pictured on the S&D have this LHS only steam pipe - numbers 44146 and 44167. (Anyone know why just a few 4Fs seem to have it?) Enlarging your pic as far as I can on the screen, the number on this 4F could be 44167. 2. There’s a curious structure on the ground in front of the bufferbeam of 75073 which comprises two metal posts with crossarms and wires between them. Anyone know its function? 3. A shame to see 41243 with cloth over its chimney after so much use on the S&D over many years. 4. Seeing 80059 being turned on the turntable makes me wonder why these engines came so late to Templecombe. The 75XXX class was too long of course and often had to be sent tender first to Evercreech. The shedmaster would have had to make sure that his locos of this class were facing the right way for the needs of the day, starting usually with the 7.35 for Bournemouth (or the 7am to Bath?). Tim.
  13. Thanks Chris, Dave and Duncan for your responses. Interesting pics, Dave - thanks. The first looks older than 64/5 judging by the wooden wagons and what looks like one of the older 2Ps in store, maybe 40505 or 40509, from the curved LHS steam pipe. (Only just noticed that those 2Ps had that steam pipe on only one side.) Must get some more of those high sided wagons! The other pics show good new detail of the shed’s south elevation plus the blue bricks around the window in the station master’s house and the reddish tint in some of the stone. I have noted pictures from all the S&D books, calendars, etc but it is always good to see new ones from different sources. Chris - I see the size of the 1933 box extension at its north end shows up well on the picture on p37 of S&D Files No. 2. Duncan - thanks for managing to find a spare moment or two for the drawings; it’s not so many years since there were sleepless nights here too! I do have a gradient alongside where the box will go so have noted your point about the three bricks difference from end to end. I may struggle to achieve that degree of accuracy on the rear elevation where I suspect my height difference on the raised running tracks will be less than it really should be. Cheers, Tim.
  14. Not much to report on finding a 50 foot Cowans and Sheldon turntable kit which I wanted for Templecombe Lower; Midland Railway Centre still showing theirs as not yet available. I have, however, tried to make progress around where the turntable will go, so will resurrect this thread to report what has been done so far. Pictures uploaded to flickr on: http://www.flickr.com/photos/tingleytim/sets/72157642546896494/ Always interested in new info on the shed roof; signal box dimensions also needed. Wondered if Midsomer Norton's box would be the same width, based on common features in their elevations? Cheers. Tim.
  15. Well done Stur modellers for the hard work and progress on your layouts and thanks for posting the pictures of your models. Some fine buildings coming along. I am pleased that my photos from 48 years ago will be helping with your efforts. I cycled to Stur from Blandford last year, on the S&D route of course, viewing the car park , open space and SDRT’s info board where the station used to be. Your layouts show just how much has changed in the intervening period. Ben: I notice you have a double track main line. That would have been useful for timetabling when the line was open and cutting waiting times at the passing loops. If only the S&D had had the funds to do it! Tim.
  16. Hi, Thanks for the kind words about my pics. Following a further request, I have uploaded the other three shots I took that day at Stur. Why oh why did I not take more! Never took any there when the line was open, more’s the pity. http://www.flickr.com/photos/tingleytim/11775578913/ should get you to the first. Tim.
  17. Gavin, I took a shot of the goods yard just after closure which shows quite a bit of detail, albeit not the bits you were wanting the most. https://www.flickr.com/photos/tingleytim/11739902283/lightbox/ should get you to it. Tim.
  18. Thanks for these Geoffers. I expect Tim Deacon would have sourced his information from SDRT Bulletin 151 which contained “Photo Feature - Diesels on the S&D” on pages 8 & 9. This had pictures of D2133 at Glastonbury on 13-3-67, E6108 near Bailey Gate and D1986 at Bailey Gate on 3-11-67 and D6317 at Wincanton on 1-11-67, as well as D6551 at Bailey Gate on 26-2-67. It also had D1021 at Bath GP on a local from Bristol. Tim Chapman.
  19. Geoffers on 26 Oct said: Class 33s pulled post-closure freights to Blandford and also demolition trains to Blandford. The very occasional Class 73 and 74 Electro diesel was also noted on demo trains (Tim Chapman's book has some these details). I regretfully have to deny being the author of an S&D book! It was in fact Tim Deacon’s book "The Somerset and Dorset - Aftermath of the Beeching Axe". There is a reference to an electro-diesel is on page 45, confirming that E6108 topped and tailed with D1986 to Blandford on 3 Nov 1968. Are there any published photographs anywhere of E6108 on this occasion, or of any electro-diesel on the S&D? Geoffers on 28 Oct said: One exception to this, however, was D6551 on the Bailey Gate milk train on 26/2/67 (as recorded by Tim Deacon in his book "The Somerset and Dorset - Aftermath of the Beeching Axe"). I’m pretty sure that this occasion can’t have featured in Tim Deacon’s book. It is, however, in Jeffrey Grayer’s “Final Glimpse Part Two” on page 5. I didn’t get any other opportunities to see whether diesel or steam was used on these creamery trains around that time. Interesting that Geoffers recalls them as being mainly steam. I took two more pictures of D6551 on that day which can be seen on www.flickr.com/photos/tingleytim/sets/72157627483363749/ All the best. Tim Chapman.
  20. Funeral train ran on 25 Oct 1961 from Brighton. Picture of it entering Blandford in Richardson's Steam on the Somerset and Dorset on page 61. Cheers. Tim.
  21. The technology didn't work on my screen. The 3 dots after shipleymr on the two previous posts should be replaced by s.org.uk Hope this makes sense. If this doesn't work then once again I admit to being defeated by technology.
  22. That link should have read http://www.shipleymrs.org.uk/evercreech.php Hope the technology works this time.
  23. Yes Berrow, and Shipley's Evercreech Junction. Broad Sidlinch is ciurrently on display at Holt station on the North Norfolk Railway, though everytime I've seen it it has not been running Somerset and Dorstet related stock. Can't resist this opportunity to give my club a plug. Pictures of the Evercreech layout can be seen on http://www.shipleymrs.org.uk/evercreech.php Oh, and details of this weekend's exhibition also available on that website! No SDJR layouts this time but it's always a good show. Let me know if you can make it.
  24. I used to have some pictures of Bailey Gate on my Fotopic photostream until that firm went bust. Prompted by the interest from this group I have resurrected them using Flickr on http://www.flickr.com/photos/tingleytim/sets/72157627483363749 and will eventually restore other S&D shots. Dec 64 S&D pictures already viewable from that link. Tim.
